Around the World Airline Tickets - Any Thoughts?

I searched the forum and there were a few threads going back 10-15 years or more, but none recent, so I am asking anew.

I want to take a trip to many destinations progressing around the world, ultimately ending up where I started. I see that some of the airline alliances (e.g. SkyTeam) offer an Around the World ticket option, essentially piecing together requested segments using their member airlines onto one ticket. Does anyone have any recent experience with this kind of ticket? Are they better value than simply buying the segments individually? Before I spend too much time assembling a request for a quote I thought it good to get some feedback from the forum.

Thanks

From what I remember when researching this, SkyTeam's options are pretty limited. You would be better off going with Star Alliance or One World. Using this option is certainly easier than piecing together segments yourself, but may not be cheaper since you can't take advantage of budget flights.

Back in my younger days, I met up with a few travelers who were doing round the world trips, but from what I can remember, they did it themselves to save money. So you need to ask if you would rather have the convenience and ease of using one of the alliances above, or would rather have a more flexible itinerary and save money.

You might want to check online as well, there are a number of bloggers who have good information on their sites about RTW travel. Here are a few that I found that are pretty comprehensive:

I used Star Alliance Around the World fares on business trips 6 or 7 times back when we lived in Singapore, mainly due to the dramatic cost saving realized versus booking individual legs. The RTW pass essentially saved me 50% when compared to individual bookings. An added benefit was the flexibility involved in organizing a comprehensive itinerary which in my case combined business related stopovers with a little personal vacation time along the way. Doesn't hurt either that they give you up to a year to complete your journey, though in my case I rarely exceeded 90 days for a trip.
It's a great deal. You don't say where you're from, but if you're anywhere near a United ticket office I think you'd benefit by stopping by to peruse a folder they keep there describing the various benefits, terms, and conditions of all of their passes, which include special travel deals circling Asia, the Pacific Rim, and Europe that might also be of interest. There's a lot more info there than what you'll find on the Star Alliance website.

Edited to add: travelers from my company HQ on the US east coast used the One World program (American is their flagship carrier)) for their own RTW trips, and they all seemed equally happy using that. Their terms, conditions and pricing seemed to be about the same as Star Alliance (United).
