Does anyone have a preference, Arles VS avignon?? We will try and see the various sites in the area. We will Arrive from the Cinque Terra area and then travel to Marseille where we will fly to Barcelona. Any other opinions or suggestions? Traveling with my 21 year old daughter.
Thank you. I did read that Avignon may have more nightlife as far as my daughter. Do you agree? She also has expressed an interest in Nice, your thoughts. If we plan a side trip there, do wego from Cinque Terra??
Any idea what the distance (travel time) would be from Cinque Terra to Nice? Is this a train or bus? As always, thank you for your very informative feedback.
have been to both but would give an edge to Avignon as livelier and with good tour connections if you have some time to explore the wonderful countryside.
Also shopping is better in Avignon. Have fun!
Thanks to all. I am so excited about my FIRST trip to Europe and it has certainly taken this "village" to help me get ready. All of the advice is so complete and has done away with any worries I may have had. I am now just counting down the days as I prepare my last few details. Thanks again!!
I think part of this decision has to do with how long you will be in the area and what else you want to see.
For access to some of the nearby towns and sights (e.g. Nimes, Uzes, Orange) and no car, Avignon is perhaps a bit easier to connect to these towns by bus and/or train.
With a car, definately Arles - way more laid back, a nicer town to walk around in, find a hotel near a garage or on the outskirts of town. Arles has more of a small-town feel but some of the best roman ruins around. The Saturday market in Arles is really something.
No doubt lots of art in Avignon, but just on a personal basis it seems a bit overrated, but JMHO.
For nightlife? Well . . . I think either Barcelona or Marseille will be a better bet!
