Can anyone tell me if tweezers are allowed in carry-on luggage?
Yes!
Go to the TSA web site. It will list items that are permitted on board.
Yes, tweezers are permitted.
What about a leatherman-type tool with a short knife blade and other attachments? This one is the micro-sized one. I think ANY length of knife will be confiscated. I went to the TSA website but I can't decipher if it's OK or not...
The TSA list OKs tools "less than seven inches in total length". As for whether or not a small blade on such a tool would be permitted, I think it depends on the blade length. I know they used to confiscate nail clippers with tiny file/blades, but they no longer do. If you're worried about losing it, I'd put it in checked luggage or leave it at home.
Dave, According to the TSA website, knives (I'm assuming any type of knives) are a prohibited item in a carryon bag, with the only exception being plastic or round-bladed butter knives; however, such a knife as you describe can be carried in a checked bag.
Dave: The TSA regulation with respect to knives is as stated by Gina: Knives are absolutely prohibited as carry-ons, "except for plastic or round bladed butter knives."
Thanks, since we're only carrying our bags on and not checking, I'll leave the knife at home!
I'm sorry to give a contradictory answer to this one but if your return leg is out of any UK airport metal tweezers of any sort will be confiscated.
This isn't my specialist area so I phoned colleagues at Dublin airport. Their answer was 'definitely not at Dublin or any airport in Ireland or mainland UK'
TSA rules don't mean a thing over here.
As for a leatherman with blade, you can't be serious. NO!
Here's my mainly empirical experience: Tweezers are no problem at any US airport, based on the TSA list, which my experience (probably a dozen or more internal flights a year) confirms. I've flown twice into and out of Canadian airports (Vancouver to transfer, and Montreal, and Toronto). Again, no problems. European airports that I've flown out of with no problems--Paris (CDG), Barcelona, Berlin, Budapest, Heathrow, and Manchester. (The BAA list of officially banned items at UK airports doesn't list tweezers as prohibited, and doesn't list them as permitted. So I assume that it's up to an individual screener to make the call.) Brisbane was also fine, but Hamilton Island airport in Australia pulled them out of my carryon, tut-tutted a bit, and then let me have them in my carryon, warning me not to do it again.
So...as far as I know, no official security list of any country lists tweezers as banned, the TSA lists them explicitly as OK, and mostly my experience is that they're allowed.

I have flown through Heathrow to Spain and back have never had my tweezers questioned, either.
My experience has been that even the TSA on line list is not consistenly followed by security checkers. (On my last trip in April I printed it out and had it with me in case I needed to defend a medication in a 4 oz bottle.) But my tweezers were OK, but not my cuticle scissors, even tho the blade was less than the maximum size allowed.

I think some of us here have overlooked one important point...
TSA is an American regulator. You are from BC which is in Canada, not American (USA). I am to assume you will be flying out of Canada?
In Canada, our regulator is called CATSA. Have a look at the CATSA website to answer your question. Or your Airline specific website.

According to the CATSA website, tweezers are permitted in both carryon and checked luggage.
