We are planning our 2026 trip right now and want to include European cities and towns with lots of great architecture, Medieval and other (not so much modern) architecture.
We loved Rome, Prague and York for this reason and are looking for other suggestions.
Thanks!
Palermo has some of the most interesting medley of architecture I've ever seen!
Vicenza and its environs for Palladian architecture and the UNESCO listed Olympic Theatre.
Here is a fun article:
https://www.lonelyplanet.com/articles/what-are-the-best-cities-in-europe-for-architecture
1. Córdoba, Spain · 2. Bath, UK · 3. Basel, Switzerland · 4. Lecce, Italy · 5. Copenhagen....
Many, many other places-- our favorites: Seville and of course Cleveland Ohio.
Good luck and happy travels!
Bruges and Edinburgh
Rouen cathedral and half timbered houses?
Amsterdam came to my mind first. Also Paris, Prague, Budapest, and Brussels. Nancy, France has some great Art Nouveau architecture; not medieval, but not really modern either, and definitely interesting. Bruges is good for medieval. In Italy there are some lovely medieval towns. My favorite was Siena.
My favorites so far, not including some of the places already mentioned:
Erice, Modica, Scicli, Ragusa, Noto, Piazza Armerina, Matera, Gravina, Urbino, San Gimignano, Siena, Teruel, Segovia, Trulijo, Burgos, Gordes, Neims...
Miles to go before I sleep.
I'll list those in the towns rather than in cities:
Germany: Lüneburg, Weimar, Rheinsberg, Schwerin, Potsdam, Minden an der Weser, Wetzlar, Meissen
France:: Troyes, Bar-sur-Aube, Romilly-sur Seine, Rouen,
Bruges, Paris, Florence, Venice, Siena, San Gimignano, Orvieto, Toledo, Segovia, Seville, York, Prague, Rothenberg ob der Tauber, Istanbul.
Colmar, France and the nearby village of Eguisheim, France.
Chester was announced the most beautiful city in the world earlier this year so it must be worth a visit! :-) If you liked York should like Chester.
Shrewsbury is also full of medieval buildings
Quedlinburg, Goerlitz and Erfurt in Germany.
Romania has quite a few cities with lovely historic districts because the money wasn't available during the Cold War era to rebuild them. The exception is Bucharest, where Ceausescu knocked down a lot of the old stuff.
We just got back from the Netherlands and Belgium and would recommend Leiden and Bruges.
Barcelona and Vienna
Thank you everyone for these great ideas!
We are thinking of flying to London first (6 nights), then flying to Vienna (6 nights), taking the train to Budapest ( 4 nights), then flying to Edinburgh (. 4 nights), then spending more time in London ( a week). From London we will try to do day trips to some of these places: Ely, Canterbury, Winchester and Oxford, all of which we have been to before but I love cathedrals and Oxford’s museums.
I will also post this for itinerary ideas in another post.
Thanks and any further suggestions are welcome.
My top vote would be for Budapest, but I I agree with acraven that Romania deserves consideration. Timișoara has some lovely architecture, and really, there is gorgeous architecture all around the country.
I would add in Berlin, which has some gorgeous buildings there. And London, of course, where there is beautiful and incredible historic buildings, but also striking new ones.
Many, many other places-- our favorites: Seville and of course Cleveland Ohio.
David, I'll accept that as long as it comes after Cincinnati. 😉
