Does anyone have ideas on approprite attire for going to the opera in Budapest on the 2nd night of a 2 week excursion through Hungary,Venice, Vienna and Prague.My wife and I'd like to dress well, but doubt I'll need to wear the same thing again during the rest of the trip.I'm certainly conscious of lugging extra clothes around and would hope to avoid it.

We went to the opera in Budapest two years ago. I took very careful notes of what people wore. It was a bit more dressed up, most likely, than in the U.S. The women were mostly in skirts and dressy dresses, some pantsuits. I wore a skirt and blouse with wedge heels. Most men were in jackets, some in suits; I saw one tuxedo. The men in jackets were mostly not wearing ties. My husband and son both wore chinos, button-down shirts and blazers; can't remember if they wore ties. I saw only a couple of people in jeans. We were traveling at the end of May, and my husband and son did wear their blazers one or two other times, partly for warmth in the cool evenings.
