Apple Air Tag

Has anyone had occasion to use the Apple Air Tag (luggage tracker) and if so did it perform? TIA

Hi Mark, yes, we used them for the first time on our recent trip to Paris and they worked fine.

I’ve been using one to locate my suitcase for about seven months. It has performed very well.

Yup, attached one to my son's special needs stroller for our trip to Spain last December. Worked great! I had assurance that it had been loaded onto the plane for each flight (it is gate-checked), then saved us a ton of time on our arrival home when the stroller didn't show up planeside. The gate agent couldn't find it and tried sending us out to baggage claim; I was able to show her its location on my phone -- it was still under the plane.

I just watch for my bag coming off the carousel at my final destination. After 30+ round trips to Europe, most involving 3 airport handlings each way, it's never once failed to show up at the destination. Air Tags won't improve the handling of bags at Frankfurt Airport, because the ground handlers there are just pathetically slow.

One of our luggage decided to stay back at Heathrow :))) and did not make it to Lisbon with the rest!
I wish we had AirTagged it! Would have saved us a lot of time and worries!

Yes. … first time using ours today. We are at Chicago right now. Going to United lounge to relax and wait for our next flight. When we landed I checked and it is off the plane and in terminal one.

Husband and I used 2 AirTags each on our recent trip to neighboring Washington state. I had one in my suitcase; another in backpack (in case I left it somewhere).
It was fun to “see” where my suitcase was at all times. Very reassuring when it showed it was on the airplane.
However, every day of our trip, I got notifications that I “left my suitcase behind.” I haven’t looked into how to turn off the air tags.
When we returned home, I quit getting notifications.
Last year on our international trip, my suitcase was “lost” for 2 days. Looking forward to using it later this year.

Update: In Chicago waiting on our flight to Newark. Our bags took an earlier flight without us. My tracker says they are in Newark and on the plane per United app. Pretty weird

Oh Kim!! I hope it waits for you!!

I forgot to take mine out of my suitcase and am on a car trip tp Yellowstone. I do need to figure out how to turn it off because every time I leave the hotel I get a notification. Fortunately Yellowstone’s cell service is awful, lol!!

TBH On my trip to Europe in April I got better location notification from the Delta app.

Hmm. Interesting. It never occurred to me to check where my bag was after I dropped it off. I’ll have to check that next time. I do get the notifications regarding no longer in possession when leaving the hotel. It got annoying so I put the tag in my day bag. So an additional layer of reminder if I leave it somewhere.

I have not tried it yet but to turn off or modify the notifications you go to the find my app.

Items>>>select the air tag>>>notifications >>>notify when left behind.

From there you can toggle notifications on/off or list exceptions. Currently I have my home address but I will add the hotel the next time I travel.

Thanks for this topic. It’s reminding me to get some AirTags for our upcoming trip. We will be checking bags more than once.

I've been using it for my luggage and my purse and it works great! When I flew from Berlin to DUluth, via CDG and MSP, Air France tagged the luggage and it wasn't showing up on my Delta app, so I checked it on the Find My app and it showed exactly where the suitcase was.

Pat, were you able to get into Yellowstone? We were there on the 13th and the park was closed because of the flooding.

Thanks everyone. I ordered and received them today. Going to Kenya, Tanzania and France this summer and hopefully the air tags will be reassuring even if our luggage accompanies us.

We used one in a car we shipped from the East Coast to the West Coast, and in the POD that was moving our home goods. They worked great! The only potential negative is they need to be around iPhones in order to triangulate position, but enough people in the US have iPhones it wasn't an issue for us.

Still a week away from my next trip but I think I am going to have to check my suitcase (or leave my hiking poles at home) so I bought some and have one in the suitcase already. I ran out to get some dinner tonight and was informed I had left my suitcase behind….. 🤣

They work great! I have used them in checked luggage on many trips. It’s great being able to keep an eye on things and knowing the luggage has made it to the destination with me! I also use them on keys and carryons. Very handy!

I was in London on Sunday. And there was an article on the local paper about the baggage mess at Heathrow. And they interviewed people who said their AirTag shows the luggage was at Heathrow. It didn’t seem to be doing them any good about getting it back though

Do you need to have data turned on or wifi to get the location of the air tag?

I've me on the fence about them - but we are checking luggage on our next trip - and leaving it in storage at one point - and this story https://appleinsider.com/articles/22/06/22/airtag-helps-man-discover-airline-offices-full-of-lost-luggage made me decide it was worthwhile.

I've never lost luggage permanently - but I've had it not keep up on international transfers - and I've spent time walking around a large airport trying to find out where the bags and been taken too from the carousel - after we were delayed getting the baggage claim by customs.

I think it will useful to find my husband too - he walks slower than me so it I can see potential for losing him in medieval town centres

Thanks everyone for your input. We purchased the air tags and will be using them when we go to Kenya, Tanzania and France this summer. I'll report back when we return. Happy Travels to all.

I recently had luggage arrive on an earlier flight than me and it took a while for them (at 1:00am) to get a whole plane load of people the info that their luggage was not coming to the carousel, but was in a locker a ways off. Would have saved some time then.

@slbdaisy, No, the AirTag is found by sending out a secure Bluetooth signal that is detected by nearby devices in the Find My network. These devices send the location of your AirTag to iCloud so you can then go to the Find My app, look under "Items" and see it on a map.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but...do you have to have an iPhone to check the Apple tags or can they be paired with any smart phone?

Thanks,
Kaye

@Kaye, it doesn't necessarily need to be an iPhone but it must be an Apple device, like iPad, iPhone or iTouch.

Tile makes tags that work with both Android & Apple products.
