App for texting

Hi, What would be a good app for texting in Europe? That is while there is fre wifi. Thanks.

we have been in europe now for the past 8 weeks in various countries and been using 'whatsapp' extensively. on previous similar length trips we used viber, ( and skype) but have found whatsapp perfect. between various family members we set up separate 'chats',( not sure of the correct term) where required, so not all users see the same thing etc.
hope this helps.

sally,

I use Viber and it works well. It's also capable of voice calls via Wi-Fi, and perhaps video calls too (not sure, I've never tried it).

I used Viber as well via wifi without any problems. You can even put a few dollars on it if you need to make a call to a landline.

You should ask your contacts what they use. No point installing WhatsApp et al. if they don't use those services.

yes you can video call with these apps, but more than likely your wifi wont be good enough for reliable video. ( thats what we have found in europe after many months of use in many dozens of hotels etc) but worth a try!
we found viber not to be as reliable to use as whatsapp. either way they don't take long to install.

I like Messenger right now. You can send text messages, call (for free) or video chat (for free). All you need is WiFi and to have your friends set up on messenger too.

Don't overlook Facebook's messenger app. Best part about is that since most people have FB accounts these days, you know going that it will be compatible with most of your close friends and family.

Too much of the various forms of communications about the world are controlled by a few huge tech firms. Maybe the Luddites were before their time.

We used Messenger with wifi on our recent trip to Italy. Works fine as long as everyone you need to contact is on Facebook. We only texted, but you can use it for voice calls, as well.
