For me, I just google "______ vacation rental"
(filling in the blank with your specific area/city) and it gives you a ton of different sites. In Amsterdam I found a fabulous apartment through a small agency that was Amsterdam specific... but I've also used a lot of the big names like vrbo and homeaway. Never hurts to look at all of the options!

We have used http://kudeta-home.com/ before & were really pleased with the service Stephane & Phillipe gave. Unfortunately, the apt we rented is no longer among the possibilities.

Yes.....VRBO.com is great. I use it all the time. It's a great site for places all around the world.

I also use vrbo with great success.

We use VRBO and Homelidays.com with great sucess in the EU.

Last year we used Homelidays to find our economical, one bedroom Paris apt (with a view of the Eiffel tower, and a daily rate of only $90 EU) at the top of the 15th Arrond.

VRBO--we've only used it once for an apartment in Sarlat France in the Perigord in 2008 but it was fantastic. We had a two-story stone cottage a 2-minute walk from the center of town but down a quiet alley. Completely equipped place with great kitchen. Loved it. As with anything else that depends on the specific owner of the property, I'm sure experiences will vary. But ours was really good with VRBO.

For Paris we've used vacationinparis.com and Iloveparisapartments.com.
For London we've used holiday-rentals.co.uk.com and londonconnection.com

I'll add www.nyhabitat.com to the list, as I've used them very successfully and they have apartments in Paris and London, and also in New York and in the South of France. Their agents are of very good advice, very helfpul.
