UPDATE: Anyone had their Global Entry renewed lately?

Hi All,

Back in December, I put in an application for renewing my Global Entry. I didn't realize (until I submitted my application) how backed up they were at the time. Then, obviously, they shut down when COVID appeared. I know they have begun approving passports again. Anyone know about Global Entry? Mine would have expired in March, but it got extended until March 2021.

Yes, I know I have 8 more months, but I'm wondering how truly backed up they are. I just want to make sure I don't miss the chance to book an interview again - times for those are hard enough to get even when COVID isn't an issue.

Thanks all.

:)

It looks like there is currently an 18 month extension on the validity of the pass.

CBP reminds the public that the agency took measures earlier this year to minimize the impact of the temporary enrollment centers closure on TTP applicants. Each applicant now has 545 days from the date that CBP conditionally approves his or her application to complete the enrollment process. In addition, CBP will extend for up to 18 months the Trusted Traveler Program benefits of members who apply for renewal before their current membership expires.

Unless something changed, renewing GE does not need an interview. When we renew last year, it was fill out the forms on-line, include a credit card, and it was approved. We mainly undated our travels over the past five years. A couple of weeks later received the plastic border cards in the mail. Renewal was simple and easy. Am I missing something when you stated " put in an application for renewing my Global Entry." ?

Interviews are required on a case by case basis. When I renewed last year, I had to have an interview--I did it on arrival. I had quite a few border crossings in the previous five years and they wanted to ask me questions about some of them.

I applied for a new pass (not a renewal) last Fall. Do you think there's any hope of ever getting it? On the site it still shows pending.

Both my husband and I also had to schedule interviews for our renewal. He got his approval before the shutdown, I am still waiting for our office to begin scheduling appointments.

My wife and I both applied for GE renewals late last year or early this year. Mine went through quickly and my new card was issued in February. Hers is still pending. We don't understand why the delay for her, we've had mostly the same travel in the past five years, a couple fewer trips for her. But it's all pretty academic at this point since we can't go anywhere anyway. :-(

There doesn’t appear to be any rhyme or reason for delays. Same travel, but different reapplication days led to months of difference between approval. My husband submitted in February and approved quickly. I applied last August and it took 6 months...

I thought the delays were mostly about CBP staff being diverted to other priorities, as well as "work at home" for non-essential staff.

Hi All,

Thanks for the info. Yes, I am one of the lucky ones who needs to go for an interview. I'll just keep checking the website and cross my fingers I can get approved and get an appointment before it expires. Thanks for the info about increasing it to 18 months. That was helpful.

I was able to get an appointment today for December in Tucson. I had been checking a while and the website said “none available “ until today. There were many times available today. Yay! Progress!

Lucky you! No appointments at all yet for the closest place to me (DFW) but I will start checking every few days.

The niagra falls interview site in buffalo ny is taking interview reservations starting the first week in September. We have a reservation set up. Let’s hope the office stays open. Been getting notifications that interviews when returning from overseas were available this summer. They could not have been very busy with travel bans. I completed my interview when arriving from Venice at the airport last summer. It was a convenient way to do the interview with a long connection time.

Hi All,

I was the one who posted this and mentioned needing an interview. I just received an email (Sunday morning) saying I was approved for Global Entry. (YEAH!!). It turns out I didn't need to do the interview after all. I'm wondering if because they were so far behind (even before Covid), that they just decided to have me forego the interview and they just approved me anyway.

For those of you still waiting, maybe you will have a similar experience. Good Luck!

Gretchen, maybe they only do re-interviews if there were significant or suspicious changes in your basic information. As I was told by the CBP agent, the actual main investigation (like checking police records) is done before the interview, and the face-to-face is a formality to catch really bad liars.

I got my approval over a year after I submitted my renewal application. Then it took a month or so to get an opening for the “ interview”. Actually the “interview”was just to get a new picture and fingerprints for the new card. Got it in the mail two weeks later.
When you got the email approval did it indicate you would be mailed a new card? That sounds strange that they don’t want a new picture.

My wife had to go in for an interview when she renewed in August. Apparently they wanted and a new picture and fingerprints. Her new card arrived about 2 weeks later. The only issue was finding an appointment venue. We ended up driving from Houston to Austin to handle. Got me.

The interviewing for GE renewal has to be a new wrinkle within the past year or so. When we renewed two years ago it was all on-line, update the previous five years of travel, pay via credit card and it was done. We had been to Cuba in that time period so I was a little concern that Cuban could trip something but it was quick and easy. Our last passport renew will be in early 22 so will see if there are other changes.

For what it’s worth, I submitted my GE renewal request on January 18 and received approval today, January 20.
No interview.

My wife and I applied for GE renewal about a year ago. Mine came through quickly, hers just a few weeks ago. No interview involved.
