Anyone get car rental coverage through travel insurance?

(Note: I cannot use TravelGuard, as they don't sell rental car insurance in Washington state, probably as they are not licensed in Washington.)

I only have a basic Visa, so no car rental coverage (and no, I can't change that, as my ex did a number on my credit). I have been looking at a couple of travel insurance companies (Travelex and CSA) that provide car rental insurance with a few of their packages. For the price of CDW, I can get a whole travel insurance package that includes medical, emergency evacuation, and car rental coverage. Does anyone have any experience using this instead of doing the CDW with the rental company?

Thanks!

I know you wont have the same insurance as me in the US, but mine coverseverything you mentioned, plus more :)

I used to be a travel agent and used to sell this particular brand of insurance, so i know the ins and outs of what it entails.

I am pretty sure there should be similar insurance coverage in the US

Cate.Where are you going? I don't know if anyone needs travel insurance..I checked with my work health insurance, and they said if I had a medical emergency that I would need to pay there, and then be reimbused here. I did rent a car, and just purchased the extra insurance from the rental car company. It was a bit more, however I got the "super" insurance and all was fine! I did have an accident in Italy and I was SO happy to have purchased that. When I returned the car, they said I was completely covered..not to woory about the damage to the car..annd I could have even killed the person, and I still would have been covered.

We used travel insurance for the car. We had tire that went out that had to be covered and it was. It required having to file a claim, but we got the money. I like having travel insurance. Sure after going through reams of paperwork, I'll get some money back from my US insurance, but I don't think that they would cover emergency evacuation. Do you really want to stay in that far away from family when you are ill or hurt? Mine also included some lost luggage. And I do check some--I carry a tripod and walking poles which can't go in the cabin--and I have to connect at least once every time. I thought it was a good idea. There are lots of different levels that you can purchase. Look for what suits your needs and comfort.

Be VERY careful to check all the exclusions with any policy. We had a terrible insurance experience in France several years ago. Although we were covered for car insurance through our VISA, we were encouraged to purchase additional insurance. While in France, we had a fender bender that caused $1200 damage. When I submitted a claim I found out that the policy had a $1000 deductable so I immediately checked my VISA coverage and found out that I would have been covered at 100% IF I hadn't purchased that other policy. But because I had, it made the VISA a secondary insurance and I wasn't covered. Therefore, I ended up paying $1000 because I purchased that policy. If I had not, I wouldn't have paid a dime and had free coverage from VISA.
The bottom line is: Do your research before you leave!
