Any new Movies/TV shows you can recommend?

Hi All,

I just found a 'new' series that you can stream (or even download) on Netflix called: 'Escape to the Country." It is kind of like House Hunters International, but it only takes place in Britain. It's about 45 minutes long for each episode and they focus on a specific region of England/Scotland/Wales. They make a point to show lots of scenery and include a quick stop at a local attraction (think living history museum-type places). Fun if you want to get 'in the mood' for a trip across the pond.

I know Terry Kathyrn has posted many 'Movie' posts in the past. I thought it would be time to add to our 'Fun Movies/TV shows to Get Me/Us in the Mood."

So, does anyone have any good recommendations for newer movies to watch (it can be with English subtitles).

Feel free to list the country and the movie title(s) below! I'd love to add to my list of things to watch. THANKS!

:) Gretchen

I really like shows/movies having to do with history that inspire me to go find the places these things happened.
Right now I'm enjoying Victoria on Masterpiece (PBS) and The Crown on Netflix. As I've been reading along and researching these characters and historical events as I watch both series, I'm impressed with how accurate they are with the events and quite a bit of the dialogue even...Victoria is doing a much better job of it than The Crown but both are very good! Can't wait to go back to England and hunt down some of the locations in both of these series!

I noticed that Netflix has the Slow TV episode(s) on the train from Bergen to Oslo (or maybe I have it backwards). I didn't check to see whether there are other episodes.

"The Crown" available on Netflix is one of the best shows of the last year or two whether you plan on visiting England or not. If you have an interest in English history you might be as interested in "The History of the Kings and Queens of England" narrated by Alan Ereira (available on Youtube) as I have been. My next trip will certainly be England (and probably Spain) since I have been fascinated with English history for the last year since I found that show.

Hi Gretchen,

I love to watch int'l films from many different countries/cultures; haven't had the opportunity to travel to any of them, though.

Where Do We Go Now? is the latest film I've watched. I believe the location is Lebanon, although the village is deliberately not mentioned.
The film - 2011 Toronto Film Festival winner - was written and directed by Nadine Labaki, and is (in my opinion) a jewel.

Enjoy!

I found a new show on Netflix called, Grand Design. We watched this show when we were in England two years ago. It is my favorite show right now! Host Kevin McCloud takes you through several years of construction of some amazing homes in Great Britain. The homes are amazing and you see parts of the country you might not see on a typical trip to GB.

Be careful about the Great British Railway Journeys and Great Continental Railway Journeys listed above . Once you start watching these , you won't be able to tear yourself away from your computer . The British series is now in its eighth season . I learned about these from Michael a few years ago , they are winners

I have recommended this a number of times in the past on the Austria thread , but I can't contain my enthusiasm for it - " Vienna , City of Dreams " by Joseph Koerner , art historian of Harvard University ( BBC ) . This is a must for anyone interested in this magnificent place , and certainly for anyone contemplating a visit https://youtu.be/AFZBOTgL_Hk

And I can always count on your recommendations, too, Steven.

Caught that Brit show on the houses, Escape to the Country--it's great. My Paris-born husband and I were surprised at how nice England could be. Maybe we'll even go there some time.
