Any mosquitos or other biting bugs in S. or Central Europe Now->June 1?

I want to know if I need to bring deet or some other bug repellent along. We wil be in Italy from 4/16-4/25, Bern 4/26-4/29, Alsace 4/30-5/2, then Mosel, Rhine, Munich, Austria, Czech Rep. through May, ending up last 10 days in Paris, France.

It seems early to me for biting bugs, but if you need bug repellent you can buy it there.

I have never noticed a bug problem in Paris .

I've spent a lot of time in europe at all times of the year and never been bitten by, or seen, anything other than midges in Scotland.

Periodically I read something about asian tiger mosquitos in Italy which carry somekind of something which I don't understand.

I would presume that the TSA has anti-deet-in-gallon-container rules.

No sense toting weight for something you probably won't need.

You could be, fingers crossed, a little early to need them for Italy. We will be in Sorrento in early May and, from past experience, expect to need insect repellent for the room. I generally expect to meet the little beasties in most places that I visit in Italy, special mention for Venice, from about May to October.

Is insect repellent readily available in Italy?

I've carried insect repellent with me (primarily on hiking trips in Europe) and have found that I rarely have needed it.

That being said, Off makes individually wrapped towelettes. You could throw a couple of those in if you are really concerned. They don't take up much room.

I wouldn't go so far as to say there aren't any mosquitoes in Europe.

We stayed a night in a hotel in Modena, Italy in October. The room was full of mosquitoes. We would have loved to have some repellent that night.

Having said that, I wouldn't expect a lot of mosquitoes for the dates/places you mentioned. If there are mosquitoes, you can always pick up repellent there.

If you are sensitive to their bites or one of those folks that the little critters love to attack (even if no one else is being bothered), then by all means throw a bottle in your 3-1-1 bag.

High concentration Deet repellant usually comes in a 1.25 oz bottle. It won't take up any room.
