Any Canadians who have used Mobal International cell phones?

I'm considering ordering two of them, but there's a disclaimer on mobal.com that says, "Deliveries made to countries outside of the US may be subject to Customs clearance delays, and you may be liable for import duties and taxes - we have no control over these charges and cannot predict what they may be."

Just wondering what fellow Canucks' experiences have been as far as customs charges, etc.

Thanks!

I'm not from Canada but you might get around the customs issue by ordering an unlocked tri or quad band cell phone from somewhere like e-bay Canada and getting just the SIM card from Mobal.

I'm not from Canada either, but my Mobal phone was shipped to me from the UK, overnight, for $10. I wouldn't think you'd incur any customs charges in Canada if it came from the UK.

Warren,

I alway use roaming with Rogers when travelling, so don't have any experience with Mobal. However, I'd suggest doing a search of other Posts here as there may be some comments from Mobal users on their experiences (good or bad).

As someone else suggested, another option would be to use quad-band unlocked phones from EBay, and just order the Mobal SIM card.

In any case, be sure to review the Mobal prices carefully, so that you have a clear idea on what the costs will be.

Good luck!

I've shipped stuff to Canada before, and I think that sounds like a standard disclaimer about Canadian customs. It has less to do with the item you want to order. Sometimes shipments could be delayed quite a bit, and big duties charged, for no apparent reason. Seemed to vary by province and city. It may be worth any extra money to order it within Canada and avoid surprises.

The disclaimer is routine, since foreign customs is beyond the control of the seller. Nothing to do with Mobal.

I've had my Mobal phone for almost five years and it's perfect for me. I've used it all over the world with the Mobal Sim card. The per minute charges are much higher than if you bought a local sim card, but it's worth it for me since I never stay in one country more than 3 or 4 weeks and I don't make many calls--one or two a day at most. If you are a heavier user, you'll likely find it too pricey.

If you do order one, then ensure it is shipped by postal service, NOT courier services like UPS, FEDEX, etc. Canada Post will charge you a $5 customs brokerage fee......UPS, Fedex, etc, will charge you an arm and a leg!

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. Mobal's customer service regretted that they couldn't tell me what import duty charges might be, but I decided to bite the bullet anyway.

A $99 phone with $99 in call credits that don't expire made it too good to resist.

I'll try to remember to post in this thread how much, if any, the extra costs were.

Thanks again!

Well, I received the phones today, about 1.5 weeks after ordering. They had to send it via UPS instead of FedEx, and in the end there were no unexpected charges--just the price of the phones and the delivery charge as stated on the company's website.

Woo-hoo!
