Hi Susan (and Monte!), I think your plan sounds good. A mix of Germany for Monte, Switzerland for you, and some new places. What do you plan to do for 4 nights in St. Goar? Will you be doing daytrips from these places? As for travel time - it looks pretty good.

I also find that 4 nights in St-Goar will be too long, you could do 2 nights on the Mosel and 2 on the Rhine, just a thought!

DEFINITELY 4 nights in St Goar is too many!

Two nights in St Goar might even be an overkill. You can cover Bingen to Boppard (towns only) in a fairly easy day if you stay on the west side on the river...... Beaune can also be a one-day operation.......I've been to Colmar twice: spent an afternnon the first time, then went back a few years later since I thought I may have missed something; left after a couple of hours........ Either you're going to making a lot of loops to kill time or you need to move along.

Well, I think we would use most of our destinations as a home base to travel around from since we will have a car. We were thinking we could do the Mosel from St. Goar. But, maybe we need to move a bit more. Mostly, I think we just want to take it slow and not rush, yet since you can see we have no "big cities or sites" maybe that is too slow? Thanks everyone!

I'm also curious about the 4 nights in Verona - what else is there to see besides the Roman arena and "Juliet's" balcony? Will you be taking day trips from there?

I was thinking we would spend day trips to Vicenza, Padua, Bologna and maybe Venice (have been before). Does that sound OK?

Susan and Monte, rather than staying in St. Goar, I'd use Bacharach as a base for day trips in that area. It's a smaller town and I much preferred it to St. Goar (which I found more crowded and hectic). ¶ Four days in that area is good if you're planning to take day trips to other locations (ie: Burg Eltz on the Mosel). Cheers!

I'm anti-St Goar as a place to stay as well, but I'd pick Boppard.

I hope you have at least incl a daytrip to Venice by train from Verona. On the Rhine I stay at Bacharach (2 nights)and perhaps you could add Beilstein on the Mosel River (2 nights)on your routing of Beaune & Colmar.

I disagree with the earlier poster re Colmar. I think 3 nights sounds great. I did that in May and probably could have used a little more time. (I went specifically to see the Isenheim altar.) The Unterlinden museum is a delight - definitely a favorite small museum - and it has a surprisingly varied collection. (I only had time for the early medieval collection and the Isenheim altar) The town is a pleasure to explore. And I did a day trip to Strasbourg for the cathedral. I didn't have time for the little wine towns nearby.

We stayed in St. Goar, but it was a little out of town. Perfect with a car. They gave us a suite that had two rooms, plus bath. It even had a little foyer with a refrigerator. They gave my sister and brother-in-law a regular room for the same price. It was a nice place. I think we booked it on Expedia. If you want the name of the place let me know.
