Another iPhone question (ATT/Cingular)

I know this question has been asked a million times. I've tried doing a search but the information I find is a bit more than I need, like jailbroken phones (whatever that means) and international plans (don't need). I basically want to be able to use Wi-Fi while I am abroad. I plan to use Tango on Wifi to talk to my husband back home on his iphone (we have wifi at home). Do I just put the phone on Airplane Mode once I'm on the plane this side of the pond and not switch it back til I land here? Right? Do texts come through? I have a 4 (not the newest 4, older 4) How do the functions pertain to travel under "Network"? Enable 3G? Cellular Data? Data Roaming?

Love to Travel, To start with, are you planning to use your iPhone 4 for voice or text in Europe? For very "light" use, an AT&T travel plan is a fairly cost effective option. Regarding voice and text, it's not possible to disable one without the other (they go together). That means if anyone calls your cell number when you're in Europe, you'll be paying for each incoming call (especially annoying to get calls in the "wee hours" of the morning from someone that didn't bother to check the time). Many cell networks here "lock" their phones so they will only work with their network. "Jailbroken" iPhones have been modified to allow use of SIM cards other than those from their home network. "Jailbreaking" voids the warranty, and in many cases the phone "locks itself" again when a software upgrade is done. It's not something I would ever consider. I have an iPhone 4S so I'm not sure of the exact settings on an iPhone 4, but this should work: > When you board the aircraft, switch "Airplane Mode "ON". That will disable ALL wireless functions, but still allow you to listen to music. > Prior to getting off the plane, go to Settings > General and switch Cellular Data and Data Roaming "OFF". If you then switch Airplane Mode "OFF", that will allow you to use voice and text (but be sure the Cellular Data and Data Roaming remain OFF)! It's a good idea to check those settings during the trip! > With the phone set that way, you'll be able to use Wi-Fi in your Hotel for communicating with your husband. > If you'd rather not have voice and text, leave Airplane Mode "ON", but enable Wi-Fi only. I would recommend checking with AT&T to confirm the information I've provided. Happy travels!

We use WiFi all the time overseas. My wife uses an iPod Touch for email on a daily basis. If email is all you need this might be the way to go.

Yes, just put your phone on airplane mode, then open wifi. You won't get regular texts through your phone service. If you have an app that does texting on wifi, you will get those (whatsapp, or heywire). DO NOT enable 3G. Turn off data roaming and cellular data. Unless your phone is a GSM phone (world phone) none of that will matter, anyway, but it doesn't hurt to make sure it is off. I traveled in Spain for most of May, and used my non-world phone this way all the time. You will find wifi everywhere.

Maybe you're eligible for an upgrade if your phone is so old - perhaps a world phone (like the newer iPhone 4s), then you could also enable "Any GSM" under Wireless and Networks>Wireless Networks>Network Mode (or whatever iPhone calls it) for voice service (although I guess even your old GSM iPhone from AT&T will still have voice service in Europe). But either way, keep data turned off so you don't incur huge data roaming charges. BTW, airplane mode disables voice, data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, everything. But as Nancy said, you can still turn on Wi-Fi and have airplane mode enabled as well (so the Wi-Fi will work). Check out the KakaoTalk talk app for free calling and texting on Wi-Fi.

Thanks so much for all the helpful information! I just want Wifi, no voice or text. I don't want to get a $35K bill like what I saw in one of the posts on here...yikes!

Then all you need to do, as I said earlier, is to put the phone in Airplane Mode and then turn on wifi. Simple!

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1355 OK. So you need to turn on airplane mode and then turn on wifi. Done. SMS messages will not come through because you have turned off the cell phone part of your iPhone. You will not be able to make cellphone calls, but when you are connected to a wifi network you will be able to access data as normal without any charges from your cellphone operator (you may have to pay the provider of the wifi to access the internet, but that's it).

Why don't you use FaceTime to talk to your husband (unless he has an ancient iPhone)? It's free, and only works on Wi-Fi, so you can't accrue any charges. Bonus: you can 'show him the sights', too!
