Another Change to Itinerary and a Few Questions

Hello, All!

We (wife and I) have posted a couple times looking for suggestions and have changed the itinerary a few times, but think we have finally settled on something that we would both enjoy. I just wanted to post and see what you guys think and look for other suggestions. I know at the end of the day, we will decide what is best for us, but you can never have too much information! We will be going in May of 2016 (I know it may seem odd to plan so far in advance, but we really enjoy it). This itinerary is a little more than we had originally planned, but it hits a lot of what we want to do without travelling TOO much.

The lodging that we have found that we have liked the most and has been the most affordable is on AirBnB.

Night 1 - Fly from Midwest (Kansas City) to Brussels

Night 2 - Bruges - Nothing Planned - Just relax from Flight and explore some

Night 3 - Bruges - Day trip to other Belguim cities.

Night 4 - Bruges - Explore Bruges

Night 5 - Paris (by train) - Explore Paris at night

Night 6 - Paris - Museum Pass/Explore Paris

Night 7 - Paris - Museum Pass/Explore Paris

Night 8 - Paris - Explore Paris / rest

Night 9 - Annecy (by Train) - Explore Annecy at night

Night 10 - Annecy - Bike around Lake Annecy

Night 11 - Annecy - Explore Old Town / rest

Night 12 - Cremona, Italy (By Train) - Pretty much just check in. This is a long train (8-9 hrs if I remember right.)

Night 13 - Cremona - Explore Violin shops/Museum

Night 14 - Cremona - Explore Cremona / rest

Night 15 - Genoa, Italy - Explore Genoa at night

Night 16 - Genoa - Visit Aquarium and day trip to the close, small towns

Night 17 - Genoa - Day trip to CT

Night 18 - Genoa - Explore Genoa / rest

Night 19 - Flight out of Genoa - Back home!

1.) How much can we fit in one day from Bruges? Could we visit Ghent and Antwerp in one day or is that too much?

2.) Is 3 nights in Bruges too much for a trip like this? If it was in the middle or at the end of the trip I could see only doing two, but since it's where we start and I have heard about jet lag ruining some people's first day, I figured maybe we should do 3 in case the first day is a "lost" one and just use the first day/night to relax. Flights look like they land pretty early (8-9 AM).

3.) Should we cut a day from Cremona? I'm not sure if two days to explore the city is necessary. I haven't seen many people going there, so haven't seen a lot of information. I saw on another site that someone spent three nights there and loved it.

4.) If we do cut a day from Cremona/Bruges where would you put the day(s) at?

5.) From reading here I know many will question Genoa, but it's somewhere that my wife found and is extremely excited about. She really wants to visit the aquarium and it is relatively close to CT so we could day trip there. The old town will be fun to walk through and around the docks will be too. I figured four nights is okay since we plan on doing a day trip to CT for a full day and a partial day trip to some of the small surrounding towns.

Thank You again everyone!

Your trip is more than a year away. It is good that you have started planning early, but the earliest you can even book airfare is June. Instead of presenting a full itinerary that is likely to change several times over the next year, how about doing some more research online concerning potential destination alternatives and transportation alternatives for each and coming back here with a question or two at a time. :>)

Sometimes a day when fatigue or overall sluggishness sets in (something a friend once termed a "dead puppy day," thinking of something very sad) is 2, 3, or 4 days after arrival. That may or may not happen to you, but even jet lag can sometimes lag!

"How much can we fit in one day from Bruges? Could we visit Ghent and Antwerp in one day or is that too much?"

All depends on how ambitious you are. I visited both in one day from Brussels so I don't think it would be that different from Bruges.
I would take an early train, say around 8:00, to Antwerp. That should get you there about 9:30 so you could spend about 3-4 hrs looking around, visiting the cathedral, have a nice lunch, etc. Then take the train to Gent (about an hour) and spend as much time there as you like, maybe have dinner. It's only about 25min back to Bruges from there. I loved all three towns/cities, they are each quite different from the other.

HI

You are candidates to attend the KC Area Rick Steves Travel Group meeting. (Since you are leaving from Kansas City I assume you live nearby.) You are exactly the kind of people we love to have join our group. Our best meetings are when we have someone planning a trip. Our little group has some experienced travelers to where you are going and we would be glad to answer your questions.

Our next meeting is May 16th. Sorry we are not having an April meeting. The third Saturday of the odd numbered months at 10 AM. But with a year before your trip we can help you out. About one week before the meeting I post a notice uder the travel group tab on the main forum page. Or send me a private message for more information.

I like your time in Bruges, especially at the beginning of the trip. It should be an easy spot to take off for day trips as you'll be going against the crowds and the train station is pretty convenient. Bruges is my favorite in the early morning/late afternoon/ evening after the crowds have gone home. There is an entirely different feel to the town.

Thank you for the suggestions! Good to know our three nights in Bruges may not be a waste. It looks like a city we'd really enjoy. Also glad to know that we do have the possibility of maybe doing a half day in both Antwerp and Ghent.

Thank you for letting me know about the KC meeting. I didn't know there were any groups around here. We are from Topeka so we're not far away.

I also had assumed really only the first day would be the problem. I didn't know it could hit later into the trip. Good to know though so thank you again!

Throughout our 40s, 50s, and now 60s we have found the best way to counteract jet lag (and we fly from the west coast in coach) is to stay active the first 2 days. Not over active, just going for walks and adopting the local time zone immediately. Adjusting gradually is a disaster, for us. Occassionally we will take a quick hour nap on arrival. Enjoy your trip.
