I am planning on upgrading to an android phone, probably the EVO, thru Sprint. I own an international SIM card thru Mobal, assigned a UK phone number, and it bills me directly for usage. My understanding of airplane mode is that it effectively disables all roaming? So, on my next European trip, If I set the phone to airplane mode and install the Mobal SIM card (I assume I will have to get the EVO unlocked) will this work to disable my Sprint US phone number, and work solely as a MOBAL phone? I asked the young man at Sprint - he was clueless, which made me feel like an idiot, but maybe I am the one that is clueless. I keep walking thru this process and I don't see why it wouldn't function as stated, but I trust you techy-savvy Helpliners, over ANYTHING they tell me at my local Sprint store.
I don't think this will work as described. When you enable airplane mode, it disables any signal to your phone (cell, wifi, etc....). However, by replacing the Sprint SIM with another SIM, you can disable airplane mode and run as usual. You won't take on any Sprint roaming because the phone (once unlocked) will not be a Sprint phone, but a MOBAL.
Elaine, As you'll be obtaining the phone from Sprint, it's not likely the phone will even work in Europe unless it's a "dual technology" model. Sprint uses CDMA technology which is NOT compatible with the GSM used in Europe (and much of the rest of the world), so it won't even be able to use a SIM card. It that's the case, you won't have to worry about using "airplane mode" as the phone will indicate "No Service" during your time in Europe. On a positive note, you won't have to worry about data roaming charges! As you've used a Mobal plan in the past, which phone were you using that with?
Ken is correct. A Sprint phone doesn't use the correct radio technology to work in Europe. PhoneScoop.com doesn't show that an EVO is a dual-technology phone, so it won't work. Airplane mode will disable roaming, but it will also stop wifi. On my Androids, if I activate wifi while airplane mode is on, the phone connection is still deactivated, but I'd be cautious if I were you. There are other settings used to deactivate data roaming. If you have a phone that uses SIM cards, replacing one SIM card with another will keep the phone number associated with the removed SIM from being active. Upgrade by all means. Android phones are cool. But you'll likely need another phone to use in Europe.
Thanks yall for the info. I have a Mobal phone, I'll continue to use that in Europe. I was just hoping to not have to take two phones - you know, just one thing to keep track of. I'm still getting a Droid. Just can't decide between the EVO or that new one with two screens. Any thoughts on that two screen model?
