Annoying Facebook Pop-up

Is there any way I can rid my screen of the annoying Facebook pop-up? If it was smaller, it wouldn't be so bad, but the size of it and the fact that it pops up everytime I go to the main menu on the Helpline is driving me crazy. Can you make it smaller or delete it somehow? I am already a fan on the Rick Steves facebook page so don't really need this constant request from Facebook. Does anyone else find this annoying or is it just me? Is this a question for the webmaster or can one of you techie people help?

I'm with you, Jo! I'm on FB, use FB, love FB - but the pop-up on this site is a little annoying. It causes the center column to wrap so things bump down the page.... well, saying it like that, I sound like a complete Luddite curmudgeon - but still. Is the widget really necessary in that position? Maybe on another page? Also, it doesn't seem to be refreshing real time. Over the past 3 days I haven't seen the number of "Likes" go up, and it seems to be the same blurb about Istanbul. Of course, maybe I haven't been paying attention...

I don't mind it, but I think it should update! I guess the marketer in me admires the use of the space. ; ) Pam

I don't like it, either. I'm not a FB user, but beyond that it's just visually irritating. However, I do realize that there may be a price we have to pay for having our own travel conversations here.

You can set your computer to disable ALL pop-ups. And, because we've done that w/ ours, I can't see the pop-up being discussed.

Firefox has recently deserted me and am presently using Google Chrome. Most pop-ups are blocked, but not this one. At least now we can see the ice cream guys in Turkey.

I use Safari with pop-ups blocked but it shows up on the Traveler's Helpline page. It does not distort the columns or make the page move so it doesn't bother me...I hadn't even looked at what he was saying until I saw your post. I frequent another message board community that is plastered with moving advertising so I'm getting good at tuning it out.

I use Safari with pop-ups blocked and I do not get any on this web site. Maybe because I do not use Facebook.

Hi,
Webmaster here, can someone explain to me what the problem is? First, it isn't a popup, it's a sidebar. It replaced the sidebar we had there previously, and this new one is nearly the same size as the old one. So I'm not really understanding the problem. By popping up, do you mean that it is the last thing to load into the page? That is rather common with features that use javascript. If it is the last thing to load, you may be seeing the text on the page appear one way, and then you may see that text realign once the sidebar is in place. Is this what you are seeing? Is the facebook sidebar's width taking up more than say 30% of the width of your page? Is it just that you don't like the new sidebar? Other issues?

I did not comment because I did not have a pop-up (assuming my blocker was taking care of it), but it sounds like one does not exist. Anyways, I like the Facebook update thing on the right-hand side. Do not feel that it takes up too much room and since I don't frequent Facebook often, I like that I can catch up by just reading the sidebar. It seems okay to me.
