Annecy or Lucerne

Still working on our itinerary for September, 2016. Annecy, France is on my husband's bucket list. We plan on working our way down from Amsterdam to Zurich where we will be going from Zurich to Innsbruck via the Arlberg Pass. Hubby has been looking at Lucerne and wondering if that would "fill his bucket" rather than Annecy, since it is closer to Zurich.

So, my question to any of you who have been to both.....how do they compare in regards to beauty, things to do and see, shopping/dining, etc.

What was it about Annecy that put it on his bucket list? Without knowing that it's hard to say if Luzern will replace it. Both are very lovely scenic cities and very photogenic if that floats his boat. Luzern wins in the proximity to high alpine peaks that you can ascend via gondolas/inclines/lifts, although if you're going to be in Annecy more than one day you could go to Chamonix for mountain lifts. Several of these are easily done from Luzern as day trips (Mt Pilatus and Mt Titlis are two). I enjoyed both Annecy and Luzern and it's very hard to put one over the other. Shopping and dining as things to do are equally available. Most visitors to both concentrate on outdoor activities, some active, some laid-back - boat cruises around either lake are very relaxing and enjoyable things to do.

Luzern would be far easier if you are then travelling in to Austria, rather than back in to France.

When we leave France, we're heading to Austria. I read about the Arlberg Pass - train from Zurich to Innsbruck and thought it sounded like a beautiful way to get to Austria. Don't have our itinerary worked out for Austria. Want to see Vienna and Hallstatt in Austria. We then plan on either heading to Budapest or Cesky Krumlov before heading home.

Lots left to figure out.
