Andechs Germany > Padua Itaky - Route and stops?

I will be in Prague tonight and leaving Friday for Andechs Monastery Germany. I have a reservation for Sunday night in Padua and am looking for some place for Saturday night to break up the 6 hour drive into Padua. This is terra incognita for me so I am totally open to anywhere along the way. Perhaps Bolzano or somewhere in the Dolomites? For now I am interested in scenery and topography, not so much another cathedral or palace, unless especially a "must see". Actually, if recommended strongly enough, I could spend two nights at Andechs and just do the drive in one day. Really, I am open...

So, suggestions?

I am now off to the Pilsner Urquell brewery for a visit to beer Mecca. :-)

Thanks for all ideas! j2

Bolzano sounds good, if you would like a smaller city perhaps Merano? these stops are 2-2.5 hours from Padova.

After entering into Italy via Innsbruck, these are all good:

Sterzing/Vipiteno
Brixen/Bressanone

If it's a clear day, I'd look at the Val Gardena. This is maybe 20 minutes off the A22 highway heading from Innsbruck towards Bolzano.

The Val Gardena is the small town of Ortisei, villages of St. Christina and Selva.
The amazing Gardena Pass is a "must drive" if you're into driving alpine passes. It basically starts just after leaving Selva. Drive it just to the "top" (to the cafe/restaurant/rest stop) and then back if you're pressed for time.

Thanks for the ideas! I booked what appears to be a cool little bnb in Vipiteno. And will have a side trip to "bag" a pass. :-) Always great suggestions here.

Verona was a nice surprise for us. When are you going? If during Opera season, seeing an opera in the Roman amphitheater in Verona would be good experience.
