Amsterdam vs Salzburg - Itinerary Help Needed!

Hubby and I thought we had the itinerary set in stone for our trip in September, however airfare between cities is proving to be slightly difficult.

Here is our original itinerary -
Fly into Copenhagen from NYC
Fly to Munich same day as we land in CPH
4 nights Munich
Train to Salzburg
3 nights Salzburg
Train to Prague
4 nights Prague
Fly to Copenhagen
2 nights Copenhagen

We already have the RT Copenhagen airfare (got a fantastic price or else we would have picked openjaw). The issue we're having is there is only 1 "reasonably priced" non-stop to Munich and it's at 2:35 p.m. We get into CPH at 12:40, so it's pushing it. The flight is also a crazy $277/pp... which is half of what we're paying to get to CPH from the U.S.!

Our other thought is skipping Salzburg and flying from CPH to Amsterdam (which is $136/pp), staying 3 nights, then taking the overnight train to Munich. We'd then train to Prague and then back to CPH.

So, which itinerary makes more sense?

I'd choose Amsterdam over Salzburg but that's just my preference. Very different places in almost every way.

Looking at skyscanner.com for random dates in mid-September shows one-way fares from Copenhagen to Munich as low as $75, others at $151, and others at your $277 and up. Of course I don't know your date. The only well-priced nonstop after 2:35 is in the evening, which leaves you hanging in Copenhagen longer than necessary -- but I agree that a connection under two hours there is risky.

Still, I wouldn't switch between two such different cities -- Salzburg and Amsterdam -- over a couple of hundred dollars airfare. The difference seems like a lot compared to your transatlantic flights because you're getting such a great price on them.

Another choice, if your ground arrangements are still flexible, might be to spend your first two nights in Copenhagen instead of your last two. Then you have more choices about the flights to Munich, or even a train if that works better. And after your tiring overnight flight to Copenhagen you can enjoy that city instead of rushing to another flight or hanging out in the airport.

Hello Jennifer. Will you be at Europe a total of 13 nights ? I know that you desire to be at Munich and Salzburg, but you will be at Copenhagen in Denmark at the beginning of the trip, and again at the end of the trip. If flying from Copenhagen to Munich would be too expensive for you, I recommend : do not go to Munich and Salzburg. I would stay overnight at Copenhagen, 2 nights. (I liked being at Copenhagen). I would try to fly from Copenhagen to Prague. And ride in a train from Prague to Dresden in Germany. I think Dresden is one of the most appealing small cities in Europe. And travel in Germany (perhaps to Berlin and Potsdam). And fly from Berlin to Copenhagen. And, if your flight from New York is scheduled to arrive at Copenhagen airport at 12:40, I do not recommend planning to be in a flight departing from Copenhagen airport at 2:35 if you must show your passport at Copenhagen airport, and check in for your next flight departure at the Copenhagen airport.

I'm with you Ron. Berlin's really coming on as one of the less expensive large European cities, and it's a fantastic city to visit. And Dresden is another fantastic city in the arts that many travelers have yet to visit.

I also like to visit Munich, but it's not the best city served by budget European air carriers. And I don't really care to take a night train to/from anywhere.

I really like Salzburg more than Amsterdam. IMO it's prettier, has a really convenient/walkable downtown and plenty of sights.

I see Brad's point. On the other hand, there's a lot to see and do in Amsterdam. Apples and oranges. If you're looking strictly at costs, what's the difference between hotel prices? And I do like Ron's suggestion too.
