Amsterdam to London or vice versa

Hi -
We are planning a trip for September 2014 either starting in Amsterdam or ending in Amsterdam, with London as the other end. Two ideas we have for in between are; Trier, (We took a trip down the Mosel once to Cochem and liked it), and one of the American Military Cemeteries in Belgium.

We have received a lot of help in past years from this forum and we are hoping that folks will give us some ideas for the route to take, how much we can do via rail, and places to visit.

Thanks in advance.

There's an endless array of choices, so it comes down to what you want to see and do. Trier is not in the straight line between London and Amsterdam, but if that's where you want to go, you certainly can. Closer possibilities are anywhere in the Netherlands or Belgium (they're small countries, so I mean literally anywhere), or Lille or Paris, or Normandy (probably easier with a car). Then, there's other places in England besides London.

How long is your trip? Do you want to see cities, small towns, rural areas, or a mixture? Other then the two places you mentioned, does anything in the region interest you (or turn you off)?

Once you know where you want to go, you can determine if you would want to rent a car or do the trip by train (or even a flight, since London's six airports will have service to all kinds of places in the region).

I'm not going to get into the details of the trip with the info provided.

But start in London and end in Amsterdam. Airfares back to North America from London Heathrow have extra taxes/tolls applied. It'll probably be less expensive to fly home from the fine Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.

Bill - As David mentioned you are better served to fly into London and out of Amsterdam. I used Detroit(DTW), because that seemed the closest airport to Springport. Checking Kayak flying open jaw From DTW into LHR and flying out of AMS into DTW is $1229. Flying open jaw from DTW into AMS and out of LHR into DTW is $1307. Both of these routes are on Delta and are non-stop flights.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and suggestions! I did not realize the WW1 connection, (1914-2014), that is a very interesting idea to me. On previous trips we went to Normandy, Dunkirk, and came upon the Falaise area in France all about WWII. All very, very interesting to me.
Thanks again.
