Amsterdam, Munich, Austria, Prague and Budapest in 17 days

Hello, we need advice. We plan to spend 17 days in Europe. Flying in and out from Amsterdam. Plan to go to

  • Munich (incl. Dachau and Neuschwastein castle)
  • Austria (Tyrol and Salzburg..incl. Hallstatt if possible)
  • Prague and Budapest
  • back to Amsterdam and plan to stay the last 3 days in Antwerpen and Amsterdam before flying back to the US.

So total days outside of Amsterdam is 13/14 days.

Schedule is flexible as to where to go first. Our plan is to fly to either Prague or Munich from Amsterdam on day 1. We need advice as far as transportation. Which part is better to take train, fly or rent a car. We are thinking renting a car maybe better to cover Munich to Austria part. But the rest, we are not sure. There will be 4 of us. Thanks in advance.

From Amsterdam fly to Prague. Bus or train to Munich. Train to Salzburg. Train to Hallstatt and back or to Hallstatt overnight. Train from Salzburg (or Hallstatt) to Budapest. This order seems logistically with the least zigzagging and backtracking. From Budapest fly to Amsterdam.

Thank you!! I will check the flight and train. Can you or someone suggest what kind of train pass to get for better rates? Also, I saw discussion in tripadvisor about one way car rental (picking up at Munich and dropping off at Salzburg), do you think it is better renting a car then taking the train? I figure car may be faster? Thanks.

From Munich to Salzburg the train is fast and my educated guess is that train is faster than car. Passes are nowadays expensive and I think that point to point tickets in your case would be cheaper especially if bought ahead (at least some of them).
