Amsterdam layover

We’re planning a trip from Dulles to Glasgow on KLM. We’ve flown through Amsterdam several times before and have never had a problem. I am worried about the short transfer time though — it’s only 55 minutes. I’ve checked out other flights to Edinburgh and some of them are also less than an hour.

Has anyone flown through Amsterdam with such a short window for a transfer? (Looks like the other options are pretty long transfers. Doable of course, but exhausting!)

We’d love to hear what other travelers think. Thanks.

We have had very short connectings thru Amsterdam and have always made our flights. We fly Delta and typically get between 50 minutes and 90 minutes. One time, I could tell they were waiting on us at our outbound gate. Everyone had been boarded and they called out our names as we approached. If your travel is all on one ticket, the airline is responsible for getting you to your destination. Check for additional flights to Glasgow later in the day. If you miss your flight, they will put you on the next one with availability. One time when we had a 50 minute layover, we noted that the next flight was five hours later. We were more than happy to take the chance on the short layover. If you fly Delta, their planes often arrive early.

Have a map of the airport and know where you will arrive and when the next flight departs. Use the restroom towards the end of the first flight. You will not need to go through Customs/Immigration since your destination is nonSchengen.

In that case your departing gate will be in the same area of the airport as your arriving flight. So if you arrive at close to your scheduled time, you should be able to make the connection,

I have missed a flight in that airport over a somewhat short transit time. I was travelling to the US from France. I made it to the LH gate fairly quickly but they were doing a second passenger screening that was very slow. By the time I made it to the front of the line, they had given my seat and also my travelling partners seat to different passengers. I was literally in their line while this happened. I was not happy. I ended up on a different airline after some delay. With millions of miles on several different airlines, this was a first for me.
I have also had other transfers that were as tight as yours, but intra-Europe. Those were connections I made, but barely. It is a challenging airport if you need to completely cross from one side to the other.
You might be "OK" but more time would be safer.

As indicated above, you do not go through immigration, and you will leave from the same terminal as you arrive. You will simply walk off the plane and into the international terminal, no maze of hallways, and head to your departing gate. You will not have a great amount of time, but still plenty.

The airport has several helpful pages to help you plan for your transfer, you can look at the information about two weeks ahead of your flight https://www.schiphol.nl/en/transfers/

Much depends on whether your incoming flight is on time - you can check past history, but you can't ever predict what will happen with your specific flight. The time of year and actual time of arrival impacts how easy it is to transfer - peak summer season or a busy time at the airport can definitely put a damper on a quick transfer. If you do it, make sure you have carry on luggage only, don't make any stops between your arrival gate and the next, and make sure you have your boarding passes for the Edinburgh flight before you leave DC. I personally wouldn't personally feel comfortable with a 55 minute layover at AMS.

As you're flying from IAD, I believe there are direct flights to Edinburgh from there, are those not an option?
