I need a one-way ticket from AMS to Paris in May. I believe train travel would be best - I see a direct Thalys train for 54 euros and a Thalys with one change that takes a little longer overall - for 147 euros. The cheaper one leaves AMS an hour later. Am I missing something here?
The railroads have been taking lessons from US airlines with demand pricing. Assume that is in play here.
OK, still weird - normally the direct routes cost more - guess just a quirk of the schedule.
It's not unusual for connecting routes to cost more on European trains, particularly when they're traveling longer distances. There can be other reasons, too, especially on these routes that offer a limited number of seats at discounted rates.
