Amazon Kindle

Has anyone here used one of these? So much weight is added by books, or parts of books we carry. This device weighs 10 oz and can hold 200 books.

If anyone has one, is the charger dual voltage? Are any decent European guide books available for it?

I've seen one at a demo, but I don't know if it uses a dual charger. You can ask Amazon.
I personally wouldn't spend money on something like that. It's very light, but all you can do is load books into.Plus you have to pay for each book you puchase thru amazon.I would rather invest money in a small and light laptop. It would be the same price.

I would love to have one, but I'm waiting for the price to drop. I believe the charger is dual voltage, but I don't know (because, not having one yet, I haven't looked) if there are good guidebooks available for it yet. According to an article I read about it not long ago books will be increasingly available as time goes on. As for having to pay for the books, unless you get them from the library, you have to pay for them anyway, no matter what format you view them on (and I don't know of any laptops that can compete with the weight -- or price).

I would bet it is double voltage because Amazon is a global company and it makes production much easier if it is able to work in Europe as easily as in the US. However, certainly you can e-mail them and ask.

It doesn't just download books, you can also access newspapers (U.S. and International), magazines, blogs and Wikipedia.

At 10 oz. I'd rather carry this through Europe than 2 or 3 heavy guidebooks or a laptop (even the MacBook Air weights 3 pounds and takes up 13" of space in your carry on bag and costs $1,799 - the Kindle, while expensive, is far less than this)...and it's something you can continue to use when you are at home.

There are over 110,000 titles available for the Kindle - I'm sure that they offer at least a few guidebooks among those titles.

Be aware that unless you had access to a computer in Europe, you wouldn't be able to wirelessly download papers/books overseas. The Kindle uses Sprint's CDMA network, while all of Europe uses GSM.
