Alps or Pyrenees?

If you had time to visit only the French Alps or the Pyrenees in the month of July for some day hiking which would you choose? What are the pros and cons of each region?

First, one must say each mountain range has a huge diversity of hiking opportunities. Like the Rockies or Appalachians do in US, for instance. The Pyrenees offer a slightly drier weather. But it lacks, in July, perennial snow or snow-capped peaks except on a handful locations. I don't know what you mean by "day hiking". If you only want to venture out on a E-3 or E-2 trail for a day, the Dolimites, Valle Piñeta, Ordesa, the Flaperalp all offer hiking opportunities (and many other places). Choose wherever hiking destination fits your overall itinerary - not worth planning a trip around it especially if you are only sparing a day for it. And, of course, always have plan B in case of bad weather.

Make sure to check the Tour de France route & give it a wide berth. Yes, they cover parts of both ranges. If, however, you enjoy cycling, you could combine both hiking and watching the "Greatest Show on Earth". Have a great trip.
