We are visits Almaty for 3 days and research online has not been very productive. I would love some refreshing ideas for exploring the city and surrounds. I really appreciate any help.
Granny on the run.
It has been many years since we were in Almaty. We only had a little over a day when we were there. I would definitely walk around the downtown area and see some of the old Soviet war monuments. I liked visiting the Green market - very clean and organized and the only place I’ve seen horse meat for sale. There is a nice church in a park near by. We also took the gondola up to a sort of amusement park + mini zoo up on the hill. One gets a great view of the city.
I've researching Kazakhstan too. The online stuff is dire - I recommend old-fashioned guide books - Lonely Planet, Bradt all cover it. For online the best resource is carivanistan and their associated travel forum https://caravanistan.com/kazakhstan/almaty-region/ How are you with altitude - have you ever been over 3000m / 10,000 feet? Almaty itself is not high - but the surrounding areas certainly are - altitude sickness can klll so proceed carefully if you've not tried it before (its impossible to know in advance - nothing to do with age or fitness)
ETA - OMG we live in the same town! How are you getting to Almaty from this corner of the world - that is my current dilemma
