I apologize if this was asked before. I looked but couldn't find it. When flying an airline that has a listed "weight" limit for carry-on bags, but allows a second "personal" item, is the weight limit they list only for the carry-on or for both the carry-on and the personal item combined? Thanks
It should be spelled out in the airline's policies. Normally, if a personal item is allowed, it's considered seperate from your carry-on. The size and type of personal item are generally the issue. A purse, brief case, even small daypack are usually fine. Your personal item isn't supposed to go in an overhead bin, it's supposed to go under the seat in front of you (in your footspace). I see the rules bent so much, however, it's hard to predict whether the airline will hold passengers to them. The times I've seen people forced to check their carry-ons are usually the last in line boarding after all the first boarders abused the rules and filled the available bin space. I once watched SAS gate personal walk around measuring carry-ons and did make some who had obviously overpacked check their bags.
