Airfare seems pretty good . . . almost ready to bite

Going to spend five to six weeks in Germany, Eastern France, Belgium, Amsterdam and ending in London, summer of 2017, leaving mid-June and returning late-July. Can't leave any earlier than June 14. We had planned to fly into Berlin. When in Berlin, we were planning on taking a day-trip to Copenhagen (get up early, come back late). But then, I saw this airfare, and I am tempted to get it.

Los Angeles to Copenhagen (stops in London for 1.25 hr) June 14 American Airlines
London to LAX (non-stop, which we prefer) July 25 Finnair

Price: $1119 per person

We'll probably spend two nights in Copenhagen, then take the 1hr flight to Berlin for $52+ Checked Baggage.
I'm really digging this option, cuz the missus has NO interest in going to Scandinavia, but maybe a couple of days there may sway her for future trips.

Does it seems to early to go book the tickets? In 2013 we flew roundtrip to Berlin from LAX for $800, but we got lucky with that fare.

Price is $1119 - what's the "normal" price? Knowing that information will tell you if you should buy or not. Lucky fares are great, but they're few and far between. I saw a deal yesterday with United (flying in June 2017) which was a few hundred dollars cheaper than it had been for several weeks so we bought it. God thing we did because today it was gone.

You've got to know what the price normally is - THEN you'll be able to make an informed decision.

$1119 is actually a really good price. The last two times I've gone to Europe during the summer I haven't paid less than $1400!
Once you figure in luggage you'll be closer to that + you'll have a longer trip with the layover.
The other thing I notice is that you only have 1:25 hours in London...that is really tight with immigration and rechecking your bags. I wouldn't do it if it were me. I never have a connection that is less than 2 hours - I prefer 3 just in case the first leg of the trip is late or lines are long at immigration.

Hi Anita,
The baggage is included on the trip over there. It's just the short jaunt from CPH to Berlin that we have to pony up for the luggage. As far as the short layover, you're right. I should probably find something a little longer. Don't need to start the trip off being stressed over possibly missing a flight.

We once found a great deal in June on Business Class United tickets with Copenhagen as the "gateway" city. We flew into Copenhagen and walked just across the street from the terminal to "crash" at the Hilton. We stayed there an additional night and spent our recovery day exploring Copenhagen. We used HIlton points to upgrade to their executive lounge, with offered complimentary breakfast and drinks/snacks all day long. This was a treat because it allowed us to start our multi-week vacation well-rested.
Then we trained it to Germany. That was memorable itself, because that train trip includes a ferry ride. The train drives right onto the ferry and parks. Everyone has to depart the train (luggage is left locked up on the train). The ferry is like a small cruise ship, with restaurants, shops etc. It takes about 45 minutes. We had a beer and a sandwich, and watched the world sail by. Lovely. Then the train debarks the ferry, and continues on its way. I highly recommend this as a memorable way to get yourself to Berlin. Way more entertaining than adding another airport experience to your trip.

That's not a bad price, but I'd ditch the 1.25 layover in London. Check out Norwegian. They fly out of LAX and can get you one stop to Copenhagen. Random price check for May 2017 had one way fares starting at under $400. They're a bargain airline, so they charge extra for baggage, food, seat assign etc.

Traveling Mom, that sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I see that the train/ferry trip from Copenhagen to Berlin takes seven hours, but since we'll be overseas for several weeks, that's okay. Last year we took the ferry from Caen to Portsmouth and really enjoyed it. We'll also be taking the ferry from Amsterdam to London near the end of this trip.

Thanks for the tip!

Not to brag but I was checking for months in search of an airfare that was affordable between PDX and Copenhagen for Sept 7.
At one point fares were as high as $1400. Finally found a fare two weeks ago on United changing in Washington DC for $730!!!! Just check everyday!! I found my fare on a Monday night. Good luck!!!

The Loyalty Traveler website lists some incredible deals. For example on http://archive.feedblitz.com/882882/~5258529 they have Star Alliance (United, Lufthansa, etc) from LAX to various cities in Germany from October thru March for $515-600 roundtrip!!

These tend to be short-lived sales; if interested you should subscribe to one of their newsfeeds and you need to be ready to buy quickly when you see a trip you like. Can I promise if you wait they will have fares this good for your timeframe? No. You can look in their archives and see what they had for summer travel earlier this year, but even that is no guarantee they will come around again next summer.

As for a 1hr 15 min connection in London, to me that seems risky. Often it works, but if it doesn't it won't be as easy or cheap to ditch the last leg and take a train as it would be if you were in a city on the Continent. As a ticket holder they are obliged to put you on a flight to your final destination, but that flight might be many hours later or even the next day.

I'm looking at the AA site and for your travel date, I'm not seeing anything with a 1 hr 25 minute change. I see 2 hour and 2 hour and 5 minute connections.
If you take the 5:55 pm flight out of LAX, you will also have later flights to CPH if there is a delay in arrival.

Thanks for the input and suggestions. After ten days of searching, I ended up getting non-stop fare from LAX-CPH and LGW-LAX with Norwegian for $971 which includes one checked bag for each of us. If I want seat reservations, that'll be another $180 total. We're passing on the menu option of $35 per person per leg. We'll just eat dinner prior to the evening flight going over there and snack a little. For the return flight, we'll get some sandwiches.

I'm content with the fare, considering that it's during the prime travel season AND that both flights are non-stop.
