Airbnb security in Italy- passport stow vs carry?

Any thoughts on whether it would be safe to stow a passport in luggage while touring/hiking during the day in Rome, Florence, Cinque Terre? We are only staying in Airbnb's or apartments, not hotels. Not sure if security is any different from hotels and probably variable, so assume it's safer to carry in a secure pouch? -SM

I always carry my passport with me in a neck pouch, regardless of where I stay. Only exception is when I go to beach. Keep a copy of numbers and first page in your luggage

For a variety of reasons, I never leave my passport in my lodging. It's in my money belt (deep storage) under my clothing. You will likely get a variety of opinions. Do whatever gives you peace of mind and I hope you have a great trip!

If there was a safe I'd leave it as we do in hotels (and there are differences of opinion on hotel room safe safety). But in luggage, no. That is not secure so I would carry it in the money belt.

By law in many countries one must carry i.d., passport is your international i.d.

I would advise you to stow it under clothing and don't lock it up anywhere. When I go to the beach, I take a small bag with valuables passport in ziplock to the shoreline wrapped in my towel and keep an eye on it.
