Good evening everyone!
We have a reservation with Air France. We have had this reservation for about 11 months. There has been a plane change in the interim, which we fully expected to happen, after making the reservation so far ahead. When that equipment change happened somehow it threw one of the seat assignments out. This we did not expect. The email that was sent said there was an equipment change but that our seats were still assigned. When scrolling through the email that shows all of the reservation information, it did not show a seat number for one of the reservations. If you hover over the line where the seat number should be it says the seat assignment stays the same, but shows no number. We just weren't prepared to accept this as fact so the husband called Air France. One of the reservations didn't in fact have a seat assignment any more. In fact they had moved the seat assignment to a different, cheaper seat. Obviously we had paid for a slightly more expensive seat. It took some patience and a lot of time, but I think we have it straightened out. I so didn't want any surprises at the airport! We fly out on the 27th. If you all would cross your fingers for us that this is truly fixed, we sure would appreciate it.
I guess the actual reason for this post is to let others out there know that believing the email is not always the best route! The person at Air France seemed genuinely concerned, was very nice and double checked everything before ending the call. Thank goodness - crisis (hopefully) averted!
Thanks for the heads up. This goes under the heading of “things that don’t happen to you, till they do”. There was a thread about this subject not too long ago.
At least you got an email so you we alerted to review your reservations. Air France once canceled one leg of a reservation (about a month before flight date) and rescheduled the connection but I only found out when I happened to look online. Yes, we were able to get more acceptable flights (not fond of 6 a.m. departures!) but if I hadn't checked ...
So now I'm obsessive about looking at my reservations about every month, more frequently in the weeks immediately prior to flight time.
Thanks for the heads up. Hopefully your trip goes smoothly....fingers are crossed! Have a great trip.
The exact same thing happened to us last September except we got no notification. I logged in and saw there was a problem. We also paid for exit row seats that were no more. It took several calls and lots of frustration but it (sort of) worked out. We didn't get the good seats we were looking forward to, but we did get basic seat selection for free (they refunded our pricey seats and didn't charge for the new ones).
I think for me I was more angry with the multiple lengthy calls with agents who just didn't get it. Several couldn't figure out that a change of aircraft was the problem. It was a debacle and I was relieved that the flight went ok in the end.
It's odd what the telephone agents can't see on their computer screens--or perhaps just don't notice. I had a domestic flight last winter on which a segment was changed from a major airline to a commuter line without any notification to me, then there was a schedule change. I don't take commuter flights. Period. I called to get rescheduled, which I was able to do, but the agent insisted that I had booked a commuter flight initially because the flight number was such-and-such. I was looking at a printout of the original reservation that clearly showed the major airline was the operator of the original flight. Apparently the agent couldn't see the original booking.
This is not unusual with Air France. A couple of years ago, they changed my husband's reservation on our flight home - from Sunday to Monday -which for business reasons was not feasible for him. The explanation was that the flight had been canceled - which it hadn't been since I was on the same flight (separate reservation) and confirmed with the airline directly that the flight was indeed still on schedule. When confronted with this information, they continued to lie about it. They insisted that they had also notified me (in the same email they sent my husband - and I asked them how that was possible since we were booked separately. Long story short, we did manage to get home - on a different airline and not in Premium economy (which we had paid for). Suffice it to say I will never fly Air France again....
We have flown Air France a few times in the past 9 years and always found the quality of service and food to be better than most airlines.
We did have one incident regarding seat assignments that caused us a bit of a problem.
I always book an aisle seat, which I prefer since I am 71 and do need to get up to visit the toilet more frequently than most people. I particularly try to avoid middle seats. My wife likes a window seat. On aircraft like a Boeing 777 with three seats on each side, I book an aisle, leave the middle alone and book my wife a window seat. We usually have a stranger sitting between us. Not a problem.
Well, on our flight from Paris to Singapore, we checked and and the boarding pass machine printed our passes, but when we got to the airplane, AF had moved me to the middle seat adjacent to my wife, since our tickets were booked together. I complained to our steward. I had the printed reservations that showed our original seats. He asked the man in my original seat to move and found him another aisle seat. Not only did I retain my original seat, but the seat between us was vacant for the flight.
Your husband handled that very well! Have a great trip!
Just another reason to check your reservations regularly. We love AF and have found them very professional and willing to help when need be.
Fingers crossed though and have a great trip!
I did go back on line and check our reservation this morning before leaving for work (which I have a very bad attitude about because I'm impatient for my vacation to start!) and both seats showed up. All your crossed fingers are working!
8 days! I need this vacation so much. We will be going to Lyon (among other places) and have reservations at Bocuse for dinner. I wish I had been able to do this before Chef Paul passed. When in culinary university I was tasked with doing a report on Chef Paul, so this is huge for me. I will be touring the Institute while there. (My boss is so jealous!) So very excited.
Huntle — wow it sounds like you are really in for a meaningful trip! Definitely have fingers crossed for you that all goes smoothly.
