We are picking up a car from Rome LDV airport on Sept 13 and driving north. Want to stay in a farmhouse and enjoy the locals. We'd love to see Etruscan ruins, if we can. Any ideas or similar experiences?
Don't know that much about Etruscan ruins other than the Etruscan town gate and a few other sites in Volterra. Volterra also boasts an excellent museum that focuses on Etruscan history. My husband is quite a history buff and was VERY impressed by this museum. Do take the audio guide, it's well worth it as even the Italian explanations on the exhibits are rather sparse.
Wonderful, will do! Museum is in town of VOLTERRA? Thanks again.
Anyone stayed in Agratourismos? I thought RS mentioned it in one of his past shows (don't recall which one and uncertain how to look up in his old program scripts). /ca
There are quite a few Etruscan tombs around Chiusi. I believe you can go to the Estruscan museum in Chiusi and arrange a visit. There are Etruscan tunnels under the church you can tour, too. Orvieto and Volterra also have some nice Etruscan sights. As for Etruscan ruins, they just don't exist everywhere the way Roman ones do. You'll have to be extra diligent to find some.
At Cerveteri, the Necropolis of Banditaccia, is a great Etruscan site, also with a nice museum in the town itself that complements the site, as well as Etruscan history overall. Tarquinia is also a good choice, but it is getting a bit further from Rome, but still obtainable enroute to places in Umbria and beyond. Very possible to link both of these sites together, and they are excellent visits.
We are staying at an agriturismo in the Dolomites in December. Over 20 years ago, when I was a kid, we stayed at one (working farm in the same town in the Dolomites) before the program officially existed. We enjoyed it enough, that we are taking a couple of days to do the same with my kids. My parents still exchange Christmas cards with the farm owners.
And if you want to see Roman ruins not far from Rome, go to Ostia Antica.
There is a website called Roter Hahn for agriturismo in Northern Italy. It is in German but if you scroll all the way down, on the bottom right side bar you can select English. They have many places listed. In September, one specializing in wine would be good, often they also have apple orchards. Quite a few of the places have a home page and/or e-mail. They are arranged by area (Dolomites included) and some are in or near great small towns like Merano or Bolzano. The web address is: www.roterhahn.it/de
You could also google agriturismo and get more sites.
