Any tips or advice for Luxembourg? We plan to arrive on a Sunday and then are departing on Wednesday, so we'll have two full days before heading to Belgium.
Don't expect a lot to be going on when you arrive on a Sunday. Luxembourg City is as closed as a closed thing on a Sunday.
There are two main entrances to the casemates. When we were there a couple of weeks ago the larger ones were closed.
I like Luxembourg City well enough for a day or so, but do you not intend in your stay to get out into the countryside? Luxembourg (the country) has a well organised and well integrated bus and train system (www.cfl.lu) to take you to all the main towns.
What sort of things do you want to see? Your question is sort of like "Any advice for California". What sort of advice?
Where in Belgium are you headed, and how?
Hi Nigel,
Yes I was broad on my question. I had typed a long detailed post and then deleted it. It will take us three legs to get there so we will be tired when we arrive Sunday afternoon, I'm fine with things being closed we'll probably check into the hotel and get settled in then walk around and end up at a café or a bar to relax for a while. I know we plan on the Casemates, Notre Dame, General Patton's gave/the Cemetery but other than that I am open to suggestions. We like art, antiques, history, good food and good wine. I have been looking at Hotel Francais but I haven't booked it yet. We are headed to Bruges via train when we leave. Probably an afternoon train so we can enjoy lunch before we leave and arrive Bruges early evening so we have time to check in and then walk around and grab dinner. From Bruges we head via train to Ghent and then Brussels. We'll be there Oct 11th - 24th. Thank you.
I'm sorry, I forgot (I hate that I can't see your post when I am typing a reply). We would love to get out to the countryside and would appreciate suggestions of places to go. Thank you again!!!
We spent 4 nights in Luxembourg last fall -- all of it in the countryside. We meant to get into Lux City but never did. We based ourselves in the little town of Diekirch but if we return we would stay in Ettelbruck-- a lovely little town & transportation hub.
Anyway, we thoroughly enjoyed the amazing World War II museum in Diekirch. If you're interested in Patton, there's also a Patton museum in Ettelbruck. We also enjoyed hiking up to the castle in Vianden, and we enjoyed visiting Clervaux to see the Family of Man photographic exhibit.
Research all of these to see what appeals to you.
Luxembourg has a great public transportation system which allows you to ride buses and/or trains all day for 4 euros per person. It's a beautiful, friendly country -- we really enjoyed our visit and hope you do too.
