Adding "tie down" straps to a bag?? HOW??

Ok, now THIS is a strange question. I have an older patagonia bag that is very nice for short trips. The only problem is that the compartments which lie out flat do not have internal "tie down" straps in them. I would love to use this bag more, but need the straps to hold things in place.

Does anyone know of a way to add them? What sort of shop would I go to? Does anyone even sell the straps? Any and all ideas/suggestions/tips would be VERY much appreciated!!!

Thanks !

Hmm, wow, that's a toughie. Is there a seamstress or outdoor store near you that might repair tents or luggage or camping gear? I would think that they would have the means to add such a thing for you. Or, if you want to do it yourself, go to a store that sells climbing gear with all sorts of webbing and such. Buy some webbing that meets your needs by the length. Cut it to size and add your buckles, cauterize the edges with a lighter, and then using a heavy gauge needle, sew heavy duty snaps to the straps you've made and in the appropriate areas inside your pack. Then snap 'em in.

I haven't done this, I'm just thinking off the top of my head.

You have an REI in Dallas (4515 LBJ Fwy, Dallas, TX 75244, (972) 490-5989) give them a call and see if they have recommendations. You can at least buy the tie down material there.

I'd also try a good shoe repair shop - they have the right kind of heavy duty sewing machines for this kind of task.

It is easy to do. I have done it. Go to REI or a similar store -- will have a wide selection of tie straps and buckles. Determine length and location. Use a little fabric glue and temporary secure the end of the strap where you want it. Take it to a shoe repair and they will be pleased to sew them in place for a couple dollars.

The suggestions about a shoe repair shop are excellent. Since you're in Dallas, try the camping section at Academy for the straps. They have something in all widths.

Dick sporting goods has those kind of straps. I bought 2 of them about 3 months ago, 41.95 each.
You also can check ebay or google for online stores.

if you have any sail boat companies, marinas, etc, try to locate someone who makes or repairs sails for sailboats.
We used to get a local sail company in florida to make surfboard bags for us to use for travel.

Bea, something is wrong with your price. The straps are more like 4.95 not 41.95 or else we are not pricing the same thing.

I really hope so, Frank. At $41.95 per strap I'd have to just buy another bag! ;)

This old Patagonia is a nice little bag. It's their LBC (Little Brother Carryon), they don't even sell it anymore. It is a smaller 2 compartment shoulder bag, perfect for shorter trips...except that is has no tie downs inside.

Thanks to all! Has anyone ever done this? Did it end up working out ok?

I did this last year with a bag that I loved but thought tie downs would make it better.

I found some web straps at Walmart in the camping section after looking for all the parts elsewhere. they were quite good and had the right kind of buckles I wanted. I think they were under $2.00 for a strap. Instead of having the strap itself sewn into the bag, I took two small pieces of the nylon belting material and had two pieces sewn into the bag like a couple of belt loops for each strap. I had a local shoe repair place sew them up for me. Now I can replace the strraps easily and the buckles are able to move to different postions in the bag. Works quite well. Remember to heat melt the edges of the nylon web if you cut it to keep from fraying.

Thanks Ron, cool! Can you describe where in the bag you had the loops sewn, that it allows you to move the straps location?
