Adapter with USB ports

We are packing to go on your first RS GAS tour the end of the month. I got my clothing down pretty small only 20 lbs.layers layers layers ..sorry you will see me with the same clothes often.
My thing I am missing is a adapter. I will be bringing an iPhone, iPad and small camera that will all need charging. I see RS sells adapters with a USB port is that all I need? Someone said I need a converter in order to use the USB port. A friend said if I plug my iPhone or iPad in the adapter they will fry. Now I have traded worrying about trains to worrying frying my iPad & iPhone.

Not sure I have time to even order his before we leave, Radio Shack was out yesterday.
Thanks for any help.

Look at the power supply on the USB adapter. I have two in my desk. Both say 100-240VAC. They would be fine in Europe.

My old camera had a USB port, and I used to charge it from my laptop. You should have an Apple charger for the iPad and iPhone. Look at its specs. It probably says 100-240VAC

Lee, Thanks, if I find one that says 120/210 and has USB ports then I could plug the cord from my phone right into the adapter with out going through my Apple charge. Just don't want to burn it out the first day.
These forums are so very helpful.

Assume that eventually you'll go somewhere that requires a different adapter. Further assume that at some point you'll want to get electricity to something other than a USB.

Pop into any camping, travel, or electronics store and get a package of five or six adapters for a whopping ten bucks that will take care of you in most parts of the world. Stick your existing charger cube into it and you're in business forever without having to buy additional USB gizmos.

Unless I've lost my mind, I think there are two types of outlets in Switzerland?

Switzerland is strange, Ed. they have a type of outlet in some hotels that I have not seen elsewhere. Sometimes my little "pluggy thing" works in them, the one without grounding. The good news is, if you don't have the right type of adapter, ask at the front desk. They often have some they can loan you. This works in SW as well as elsewhere. A lot of adapters get left behind.... I know I have forgotten my share!

I think I did not phrase my question correctly. The adapter Rick Steves sells and many of my local stores has a built in USB port in addition to the outlet. So do I understand correctly I can plug my iPhone and or iPad in that adapter directly? In the outlet I can charge my camera battery.
So if I purchase one of these I am good to go most any where. correct?

Yes, as long as the adapter end fits the outlet -- which won't always be the case.

Sue,

If you have found an adapter yet, you can find them at airport shops and sometime the in flight magazines for sale. Yes they can be more expensive , but if youre in a crunch, it will do.

Whatever you do make sure you find one with 2 usb port since you are bring alot of e garbage.

Also make sure yiu can plug something at the same time. There are some adapters that only allow you to do one thing at a time.

Happy trails

Ed, Thanks for the tip. no, I haven't found one yet. Still a week to hunt. Hmmm just brining iPhone and iPad not so much "egarbage". One small camera. I thought it would be an easy find. my husband says every store will have them in Trier..says the man who doesn't even own a phone.
Hope to find one this weekend. Should have ordered from Rick.

Sue, do you have a Walmart or Target near you? A couple of cheap adapters and plug your chargers into them. If your iPhone or iPad is at all recent it will have a universal charger (unless you bought a cheap replacement online or from a dodgy shop which may only do 115V and will blow up.. But if they are genuine Apple they should be OK. Check the writing on the brick. I wouldn't worry about trying to get a USB adapter. Much more money, and you still need the cables.

No, not every store tell your husband. Maybe not even very many. But one or two, maybe, in Trier. But who wants to hunt for them when you are jetlagged and every minute and second of your expensive holiday should be spent doing things you want to do instead of what you need to do.

Still stuck when you arrive? When you get off the train in Trier there is a Media Markt right next door with every cable and adapter known to modern mankind.

I live on Cape Cod wonderful place to live but we have no where to shop....nothing. I went to my local Apple store today and they sold me something I had to later return. Then went to Radio a Shack and they were clueless. Maybe I should just order off of Amazon. I need just an adapter not a converter correct. ...HELP .... Leaving in one week.... iPhone 5 and have iPad Air new in Jan 2014

Go back to Radio Shack. Don't talk to the dolt. Look around.

They have them. Shoot, I even picked up an adapter to put a UK something into an American outlet once.

If all else fails, go back to what I said and buy two separate components instead of a combination deal. They'll have those coming out their ears.

Hi. I work in our retail store and am familiar with all the adapters. I also have an iphone, ipad, etc that I always bring with me to Europe. All apple products cover the voltage automatically. You will have to check your camera. But more than likely it does too. Then all you need is the adapter we sell for one dollar or you can get the universal adapter with the built in USB. Either will work for the apple products. I bring both since I need to charge multiple items. If you bring the universal you can charge one item with a regular cord/plug and could also charge your ipad with the usb. Allowing you to charge 2 items at once. Or if you want to save money you can buy mulitiple $1 adapters buy you will need to entire cord/plug to charge your items. I hope that makes sense.

Since you are leaving soon I hope you can find a basic adapter locally. Your apple products will not fry. Apple built them to work around the world and therefore the voltage automatically converts.

Sue, do you have an ACE Hardware near you. They sell adapters. Ger the one marked "So Europe" (the one marked No Europe will work in Germany and Austria, and should also fit in the receptacle in Switzerland, but will not work in Italy, where the pins are smaller). Then buy a USB charger, like this one, with a USB port rather than a line with a small USB plug. You should have cords with your IPad an iPhone that fit into the large 'A' jack on the adapter and into the iDevice.

Hi I do have an Ace Hardware not to far away. I will try that tomorrow? Packing my clothes was easy compared to shopping for an adapter. Maybe I am making an easy task difficult. The first Radio Shack said they didn't carry them..
Thank you for the help. Working crazy hours before we leave..

In addition to Ace Hardware, maybe you have a Walgreens (new owners of Boots the Chemist in the UK) nearby? They will have them.

I'm surprised that the Radio Shack dude was so clueless - maybe there's a different dude there at different times? When he said they don't have any you could show him http://www.radioshack.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=33364256 Surely you could find what you want there.

I'm so glad that you got this resolved, Sue.

NOW - go enjoy that tour.

Trier is a place that my wife and I enjoy very much and we stay there almost every year, and the places you will go after that are ... well I'll let you tell us after you get back.

Have fun. Enjoy. Relax.

Nigel, where do you like to eat in Trier? We arrive one day early.

I'm not much help for places to eat - we usually eat with friends and not usually in the centre of Trier. We're usually over the border in Luxembourg. Sorry.
