Account used to make reservations canceled

My Visa account was canceled this morning due to unauthorized activity. I had used my now-canceled card to pay for flights this coming September, as well as one hotel night. I'd also used it to book (but not yet pay for) another hotel night. You know how when you're done making online bookings, there's always a line that says something like "Please be sure to bring with you the card with which you made this reservation"? I'm a teensy bit anxious that no longer having that card/account may cause problems. Has this happened to anyone else? (Thought I would check here before calling Lufthansa, Hilton, Air Canada ....)

Teresa, for some train bookings you must bring the card used; one of them (TGV, Trenitalia, Deutsche Bahn, ?) specifically states to bring the card used even if it's since expired. For hotels, it shouldn't be a problem - as others have said, unless it's a room that's already paid for anyway (a special non-refundable internet rate, for instance) you can pay with another card at check-out. Same thing for airline tickets - they're already paid for, so the airline doesn't care. Bottom line, it sounds like you're OK! I'd bring the cancelled card anyway...

Can you not carry the old card with you just in case? For the flights, I assume that you have already paid. I've only had one occasion where the airline asked to verify my card (don't remember which airline) when I checked in and all they did was look at it. Odds are you won't need the card for that, but if you have the old card with you, you can always explain the issue. For the hotel where you have used it to reserve, you should be able to update the card number.

It's a non-issue, but carry your old one just in case. It's not an unheard of situation and people are prepared to deal with it. An id and a good card will solve the problem, but: The airlines have been paid for. Maybe one hotel has been paid for, maybe not. The other hotel probably not. In either case, you can always change the method of payment for hotels once you arrive. The only exceptions I can think of are: - - (maybe) train tickets which you bought in advance to retreive later - - not my area of expertise - - reservations at some budget hotels (doesn't sound like you) with unmanned desks where you need to run the same card in an exterior kiosk in order to get into the lobby - - if you use a different card and they have a room, you can get in, but you will wind up paying for two rooms.

This is going to sound so stupid, but I honestly hadn't thought of carrying the canceled card with me. I was told, like, nine times by Chase to destroy the card. Perhaps I'm a little too obedient! ;) Fortunately, I haven't booked any train passes or will-call tickets; just airfare (paid) and the two different hotels (one prepaid, one not). Thanks for the (completely obvious!) suggestion. :)

I have never been asked to show the same card. On my last trip, my sister actually made the hotel reservation and she wasn't with me when I checked in. They asked for a credit card for incidentals, but weren't bothered by the different card (or name, for that matter).

I once used a credit card to guarantee my room in Germany for late arrival. But when I arrived they didn't ask for my card, and I paid with cash when I checked out. Other than that, I have never had to use a credit card to book a room. Last month I used a Sparpreis ticket from German Rail. The first conductor to check my ticket asked to see the credit card and stamped the ticket. The next conductors just looked at the ticket, saw the previous stamp, and handed it back to me without seeing my credit card. In 2008 I used another Sparpreis ticket. I had registered with the Bahn in about 2000-2002, I think to get newsletters. I did so with a nickname, not my real name. When I bought the Sparpreis ticket, it came with my nickname on it. But my CC was in my real name. I called the Bahn, and they said it was a non-exchangeable ticket, and they couldn't change it, but shortly after hanging up, I got a new pdf file with my real name. My bank later told me they could have changed the name on my CC to match the ticket.

Five days before leaving on my trip (May 2012), my bank, First Niagara, advised that they were doing a conversion and issuing all card-holders new credit cards. The new cards to be mailed out after I left on my trip and the old cards to become inactive while I was still traveling. I, too, had used the card to guarantee hotels. I had to quickly get a new card to take with me to use. I had no problems with the hotels. Didn't the airline charge you account immediately after you booked the flights? If so, you should not have any problems with the airlines since they've already been paid.

Hi Teresa! This just happened to me also! I contacted my hotel in Ireland and they told me they definately needed the new credit card number which I gave them over the phone. Honestly, I didn't think to ask why they needed it; it is a R Steves recommended hotel. When I called Delta/KLM and asked about the kiosk check in they advised me the new credit card should be fine but to have my confirmation number also on hand. I was also curious about that as they tell you to use the same card you made the reservation with for kiosk check in. Anyway, I am not sure of course if this will be the same for your hotels and airlines but you might want to contact them as I did and just be sure about it ahead of time. Happy Travels!!

Teresa, When paying Hotel bills, I've never been asked to produce the card used to make the reservation. As long as they have a valid card when they process the bill, there shouldn't be any problems. When checking in at airline Kiosks, in my experience these are usually set up to allow check-in via credit card (used to make the booking), Passport or Flight confirmation number. I normally use the confirmation number. Under the circumstances, it would probably be a good idea to pack along the expired card, even though you may never be asked for it. Be sure to dispose of it when you get home. Happy travels!

A hotel will want a valid credit card number, doesn't matter if its a different one. Think why they want a CC number at all, its a guaratee that you will not just not show up, they will charge you minimally ( every hotel is different and have different policies but the basic no show fee for almost any hotel in Europe and here too as a matter of fact is a one night payment) . Remember if you don't show up they may have turned away a paying walk in customer. So ..yes, they want a valid card,, unless you have paid the whole fee up front anyways. My cc expired a few weeks after I made some reservations,, I contacted all my hotels and gave them my new number.
Airfare is already paid for so that is a non issue. Train tickets CAN be difficult, some more then others, Eurostar INSISTS on the exact same card number, and I have seen posts by people with issues after losing their wallets etc( at home before going etc) and not being able to retrieve the tickets,,,

The hotel would undoubtedly like a valid credit card number to hold the room, although I doubt that will know that the one you previously gave them in no longer valid. I assume that kind of thing is checked at the time you make a reservation, and never checked again unless you don't show up. But to be safe, you can always re-contact the hotel and explain the situation.
