We trying to do a trip from Paris to Venice this August, via Chamonix and Cinque Terre. am having trouble finding great, affordable spots for a family with 3 older kids (12,14,17). Any suggestions?

Hi, Margot! Our family of 4 stayed here July, 2008 http://www.oasis.ve.it/main_en.htm in Venice. They definitely have apartments large enough for 5. This location is on Lido which is an island across the lagoon from Saint Mark's, etc. You'll have to use the water ferry to go back and forth. My daughter just mentioned again recently how much she loved staying there and how great it was to be on Lido versus in Venice proper. The owners, Katja Hillmann and Roberto Matiz, live onsite with their family. They're very responsive. We rented one of these apartments in Paris: http://www.franceresa.com
but my husband had not yet arrived and the one we stayed in would accommodate 3. I think they have ones that might suit you. Didier Prod'homme manages these apartments and he is quite helpful. I haven't checked bookings for August. That might be a problem so act quickly. I found both of these through vrbo.com which I have used many times in Europe and also within the US with great success. Unfortunately, I don't have any knowledge for Chamonmix or Cinque Terre, but assume someone on here will. Besides VRBO and here, I find tripadvisor.com to be very helpful. Good luck!

Margot, are you having trouble because every hotel you have tried is full or is it because you are trying to find one room? Or is it because all the places are too expensive? Are you trying to find 2 Doubles and a Single or 1 Double and a Triple?

Am more inclined to finding a triple and a double - that seems to be the challenge. have an appt in Paris for 4 days - am thinking Beaune for 2 and then somewhere in Chamonix. Chamonix is expensive. Am also wondering what condition Cinque Terra is in now that things are re-opening?? My daughter is dying to go to Nice/Cannes, but most friends have told me not to bother in August??

I find most of the booking sites assume you are a couple looking for a double or a single person looking for a single. Maybe there are some that allow more flexibility but last year I did a trip with myself and two kids (mom had to work) and really had a hard time using expedia, booking.com, etc. to find rooms. Most people don't, but calling the hotel directly is a great way to do it. Let them know what you need and see what they can offer. I often end up with apartments, that are owned by the hotel, by calling hotels directly. Other times they might offer two rooms, a double for the parents and triple for the kids.
