I'd reccomend a pension (rooms in someone's home) as a good budget accomodation.

Rick's guides, Lonely Planet, and Rough Guide will all have reccomendations for pensions. You can find reviews for at least some of them on tripadvisor.com.

I've found pensions in Munich (and elsewhere in Germany) to be comfortable, clean and quiet as well as a great value. Germany seems to have pretty high standards. Some are run as you would expect a B&B to be run. Others let only one or two rooms out.

I’ve stayed at Hotel Uhland and will recommend it highly…you’ll see nothing but good reviews about this lodging from fellow travelers on this board. Another poster once recommended Wombat’s Hostel, which I then researched and will consider for my next visit (inexpensive and looked great). For now, however, I’ll have to stick with my original recommendation. Good luck!

I can't recall the price off the top of my head, but I believe Pension Siebel was less than 100 euro for two double beds. Not a spectacular lodging, but clean and in a great location just off the Viktulienmarkt.
