A4 Paper

How critical is it to have tickets for various European venues printed out on A4 paper as specified? For example, sites of the French Monuments and SBB Swiss Rail pass/tickets. Interestingly Thalys and Musee de L'Orangerie tickets make no indication of the type of paper for printing them!

Would a phone photo of the tickets work for an accurate scan of the QR code? Apps are a possibility but require data as would opening the email from the issuing site that has the tickets on it or attached to the confirmation.

When I was printing tickets I just did them on 8.5x11. Generally the bar code is not at the bottom. You can also utilize the "print to fit" or some such setting on your printer and get it all on the page.

I used photos/screenshots of nearly everything the last 2 trips and there was no problem with anyone scanning the QR code. I usually put the screenshot in a folder in my Notes section for each trip so I can access if I don't have data.

However, the last 2 trips I also went ahead with a data plan and found it very helpful for my style of travel.

Yes, regular 8.5x11 works just fine, but these days I open the ticket on my phone and do a screenshot. Works fine.

For the Swiss Travel Pass, I always print on 8.5x11 paper. I also print a photocopy of my passport as some Swiss train conductors will ask for ID. I’ve never had an issue showing the copy with my Pass. Of course, when crossing borders, if the police or border control ask for ID, you’ll want to show your actual passport.

Usually 8 1/2 x 11 paper will work fine. However, when I was heading to Scotland recently, I had to print out the ferry tickets and part of them were getting cut off. I actually had A4 paper (I use it for printing out European sewing patterns) so I could’ve used that, but it was easier just to reduce the size for printing. I brought it down about 93% (using the Fit to Print setting that Pam mentioned) and that was enough to fit everything on the 8 1/2 x 11 paper.

I take a screenshot of the QR code/ticket and store those in folders on the iCloud. I move locations often on a trip, so I create separate folders for groups of three cities and delete them as I go. And if it’s an expensive ticket, I also place it in a 2024 Reservations iCloud folder.

Printing is the same as previous replies have mentioned. I’m still a paper person just in case my phone was stolen. If the ticket is complete within 1/2 sheet, I’ll trim off the excess.

For printing out German train tickets, I always use the 8.5 x 11, never a problem when presenting it to the controller. Always shoed the controller a paper ticket, be it a Eurail Pass or the printed 8.5 x 11 ticket.
