We are in Scotland and awoke to news of the fire yesterday at the Glasgow School of Art, Charles Rennie Mackintosh's masterpiece. Fortunately everyone got out safely. But such a shame, especially for Glasgow.
My husband and I visited it many years ago. The news of the fire was shocking. Does the tearoom in Glasgow still exist?
Oh no!!! What a horrible artistic loss!!
There is already an appeal to contribute to the rebuilding:

I was at the Glasgow School of Art last August. I was horrified at the news and the pictures on the internet. But according to reports sent to me by my friends in Glasgow, the damage is not as extensive as it seemed it would be. Hard to imagine, given the scenes on the news, but that's what they are saying. I hope it's true.
Nancy, that is indeed what people are saying in Glasgow. We did not want to even walk by to see the damage. But when we checked out of our hotel yesterday, the manager mentioned that it appears the damage is not as bad as originally thought. Still, it will be closed for some time while they complete the repairs. And some of the students' work was lost---right at graduation time.
Norma, the Willows tea room is still open but we did not get there during opening hours. We did see the Mackintosh House at the Hunterian Art Museum (I don't think Rick even mentions this) and it was beautiful. Also visited the Lighthouse and spent an hour with the exhibits there. The spiral staircase is closed for renovation.
We did not have time to visit Hill House in Helensburgh but is supposed to be a wonderful example of his work.
We enjoyed Glasgow very much.
My friends wanted to visit Hill House, but I was not all that interested - until I walked inside, when I instantly fell in love with it. We ended up spending hours there. It is absolutely fascinating. We followed that with a visit to the Charles Rennie Mackintosh exhibit at Kelvingrove Museum, and also had a cappuchino at the Willow Tea Rooms.
