I am one month and two days into my short 4 month sojourn in Europe with my best freind Mary and my dog Jake. We are now in Naples.
The minute I exited from the Central Station I smiled a huge grin. I loved Naples at first sight. My only regret is that I will only be here for 3 nights. The three of us walk a lot in Naples and enjoy the place immensely. Yes Naples is Chaotic, probably a bit dangerous from a theft point of view, messy, noisy and for some daunting. I love it. It is to paraphrase Rick; Italy on steroids.
Now in his Italy guide RS responsibly advises to leave your bags, jewelry and valuables in your room or checked at the station. I agree. However I have to say that I feel comfortable here and never threatened. I am staying just a street away from the Central Station in a very nice AirBnB. This area is eclectic, busy, full of immigrants and I suspect some refugees. Some might feel uncomfortable here. I think it’s fine.
Naples is an interesting mix of the new modern Europe, the old Italy of prewar and post war days and some third world country. It’s entertaining and exhilarating.
Naples is also considerably cheaper than Rome. Especially food and drink. Yesterday we had two large pizzas and three beers at a famous pizza restaurant and the bill came to 23.50 Euros. They missed my third beer and when I brought it to their attention the waiter just shrugged and said. “It’s on me”
If you are considering Naples but a bit concerned by some of it’s negative press (especially here on the forum) I would just reiterate what I said in a previous post about another subject. It is all much better and much easier than what you read here and in the media.
I highly recommend a visit here if you have time. And make more time if you can. I wish I could stay longer.
Do not miss the Archeological Museum. It is stunning and a must before you go to Pompeii. The views from the Capodimonte Museum grounds is a panorama of the bay of Naples and it’s city. And there is so much much more...
