Would Cinque Terre be a nice romantic getaway for a honeymoon? Is October an okay month to go? September?
Yes...Yes...Yes!!!
In Vernazza, stay here: www.elisabettacarro.it/ Ask her for the rooftop room. Thank me later
It's a nice spot for honeymoon. Bear in mind while looking for accommodation, though, that Vernazza is far overrated in this forum. Nice city? Yes, but not nicer than Corniglia (which is higher with better views) and Maranola (more interesting gastronomic scene). Vernazza is very nice, just not "the place you want to go" in Cinque Terre.
steph, both September and October would be good for travel in the C.T. however planning for September would probably provide better weather (but of course there are never any guarantees with the weather). I'd suggest you check out all of the five villages in choosing where to stay. I'd recommend either Monterosso or Manarola, depending on what type of accommodations you want. Monterosso has the nicest beach of all the villages, and also the best selection of Hotels and restaurants. One B&B that you might consider is * www.torrettas.com * (cut & paste the link inside the asterisks). Congratulations!
I totally agree with the two posts above, that Vernazza is overrated, and Manarola offers a lovely, honeymoon worthy place in La Toretta. We had a wonderful, upscale room with private deck, next to an arbor covered with bouganvilla. They bring you a nice breakfast on a tray every morning, and we had ours on our deck. It was heaven. . . Be sure to read the reviews on Tripadvisor if you are considering Camere Elisabetta.
Have stayed in CT twice - once in Vernazza in Elizabetta's apartment and one at Hotel Palme in Monterosso. Elizabetta's promised a view, but we never found it. Hotel Palme was nicer. You might even consider staying in Porto Venere or Lerici, since it sounds like you'll be there for more than just a couple of days. I think Vernazza is over-rated personally - it's the most crowded of all the towns (even though Monterosso can hold more actual people). This time we spent an afternoon on Monterosso's beach and I would highly recommend it (in the new town). It's the only real beach in the region, if you are intersted in that sort of thing at all.
I would not call Vernazza overrated. It's extremely overcrowded (thanks to RS) but no way is it overrated. If I were t ospend my honeymoon in any of the 5, it would definitely be Vernazza although I would make it a point to experience the other 4 as well and decide for yourself.
I saw the title, and I thought you were planning a honeymoon in Connecticut!
Thanks everyone for your insight. I have a lot to look into!
LOL - Tom I was thinking the same thing and wondering.....EWWWW. Don't get me wrong, Connecticut is a nice state...but for a honeymoon...not so much.
Hello Steph. Yes, Yes, Yes. If your room at a Cinque Terre village is not at a high place, with a good view of the Mediteranean Sea, bring something to sit on at a high place where you will have a good view of the Mediteranean Sea. Such a place is the trail between Corniglia and Vernazza. An empty five-gallon plastic bucket with a cushion might be adequate to sit on. Perhaps you could borrow two buckets from a hotel or restaurant ? Or, if people will not do much travelling in Italy, I think bringing a very small and light weight colapsable chair in your suitcase from home is not a bad idea. I remember seeing a chair like that, advertised in the REI catalog. It consisted of narrow metal rods which can be detached, and nylon cloth seat and back. No arm rests. Unassembled, it is in a narrow bag that has a handle for carrying it. It might even have straps for wearing it as a back pack. When I was on that trail, 250 feet above the blue Mediteranean Sea, I did not want to leave. Bring plenty of water to drink. When you are at the Cingue Terre, if you want to see something interesting, made by humans, ride in trains to Lucca (a medeaval hill town). And, I agree with everything that Ken in Canada said. Monterosso is the best place for a good meal in a restaurant. Manorola is small and quaint, and it has my favorite seaside spot in the Cinque Terre. Which airport in Italy will you fly to ?
