A Homebase on a lake for much of the summer

At some point when my wife and I have more time (maybe, hopefully in a few years from now) I would love to spend a month or more along a lake somewhere in Europe, most likely Alpine Europe. Such a destination would ideally be beautiful, have somewhat warm water in summer, be public transportation friendly, and be near a fair amount of day trip type destinations, or even suitable for a few overnight trips as we would ideally spend the bulk of our time at such a summer home away from home, but could venture out a bit. Basically in this scenario it would be more like slow travel or even "summering" somewhere that just happens to be in Europe. It would also have a lot of nice walks, light hiking type opportunities as well.

Some places that I've been thinking about are Lucerne because it is so beautiful and seems pretty well located for a lot of day trips. Also, somewhere along Lake Constance might work, with its warm water and also good location. However, I personally don't find the area as scenic as some of the higher elevation lakes like the Vierwaldstattersee, or others like that. I have good memories of the Worthersee in Austria as well, but fear that it wouldn't be as strategically located. Locarno on Lago Maggiore is intriguing as it is in a beautiful area, somewhat accessible to other parts of Switzerland and yet part of the magical Italian lake zone.

Anyway, these are some ideas that are flowing through my head as I ponder "summering" by the lake in Europe.

Somewhere along Thunersee or Brienzersee, Switzerland would also be nice . Interlaken is the city in the middle, and there are a number of other smaller towns that are nearby. Brienz would be right on the lake. It's not a very big town, but quite scenic and accessible to many areas. We stayed in Meiringen for 10 days and used that as a base for exploring and hiking in the area. Also good access to bus, train and boat travel.

Lugano in the Ticino is lovely and a much more laid back place than north of the main range of the Alps. Direct trains north to Lucerne, and also south to Italy, Lake Como, Milan, etc.

hey hey rob in cal
i agree with linda and susan about lake annecy, in france across border of geneva. spent 6 nights there last october.
really enjoyed the small town feel, little villages around the lake, renting paddleboats or tours on boats, weather was great, the food was good. hope this is an idea for you to research.
you can also look at lago de garda in italy. spent 2 nights in bardolino for annual wine festival. lake is gorgeous with ferries across to villages or travel to top of lake with a boat.

If you want better weather and food, you might consider Iznajar, Andalucia. It's actually a man-made reservoir rather than a natural lake, but it looks like a lake and is in a beautiful setting. You're in the foothills of the Sierras Subbeticas with lots of walking opportunities. You'd need a car if you plan to travel locally but with one you're about an hour from Granada, the same for Cordoba and, best of all, an hour from the seaside. Sevilla and Cadiz are close enough for overnight trips, but not really for day-trips. Also it's about 30 minutes drive to Antequera (worth seeing itself, but also has a nearby station on the fast train route to Madrid and the north).
