greetings!
i'm looking for a good book on travel writing, and was wondering if anyone could make any suggestions. i've found several on amazon, and cannot decide (and, sadly, most are not available on kindle, which means i can chose only one--i'd like to read it on the plane/in bed at night whilst traveling.)
thanks in advance!
Tracy,
For lots of great information on travel writing, you might have a look at This website, hosted by one of Rick's Guides.
Cheers!
I'd suggest considering the Best American Travel Writing series (example here: http://www.amazon.com/Best-American-Travel-Writing-2009/dp/0618858660) from whichever year you choose. It's not instructional like a textbook might be, but reading the stories selected as the best examples of the genre is extremely beneficial (at least, in my opinion). I'm a writer by trade and rarely find the "how to" books useful, but again, that might just be a personal issue on my part.
Lonley Planet has one for both Travel Writing and one for Travel Photography.
There's also a book called 'They Went- The Art and Craft of Travel Writing' which is edited by William Zinsser .
The ISBN is 0-395-56337-2, published by Houghton Mifflin Co.
It's a collection of essays by six leading travel writers, and is excellent.
William Zinsser is the author of 'On Writing Well', which was a text for the Effective Writing course I took at Toronto University.
Now you've got me digging this out of the bookcase, I shall have to read it again!
