A city you wish you spent more time in?

For me, I wish I had more time in Ramsau, a small town about 30 min drive from Salzburg.

My wife says Rome.

I'd be interested to find out other peoples comments and why.

We have learned so much from others on this site that we have ended up visiting places we didn't even know existed.

Just a word of thanks,
Monte

Oh, pretty much every city I've been in. That's why I have so much trouble deciding on a destination - I want to see new places, but I have so much more to see in the "old" places.

Every trip to Europe, no matter where I'm going, will include a stop for a few days in this city. You might think it's strange, but to me, it wouldn't be a trip to Europe without a stop in...

I've realized that as much fun as traveling is, there's never enough time in any city!! Just too many to choose from. Here's my hit list - sorry, but I'm going with more than 1 on this: Lohr - Germany, Garmisch - Germany, Dingle - Ireland, Salzburg - Austria, Amsterdam - Netherlands.

Brief overviews don't cut it for me, but often no other choice. Desperately want to return and spend quality time in all these places. I like to see the "inners" of places and there's never alot of time after you try to hit the major sights in the given areas.

Berlin. I could have easily have spent two weeks there- probably more in warmer weather.

Hi Monte!

I'm with you as far as having more time in Ramsau. Spent seven nights there so far and we hope to go back this fall. Cities... just one? OK. We'd both probably say Brixen/Bressanone in the Dolomite area of Italy.

Agree with Frank, London. It's just a great city. Wonderful neighborhoods, people, theatre, diverse food choices and the history gets me every time I visit.
Spending a day in the Hampstead Heath people watching and walking...just makes me smile.

As far as heaven on earth or as close as I'll get...Glendalough.

So many cities I could easily spend more time in, but the one I really did not budget enough time for was Warsaw. I only planned a brief stop here because I needed to break up the long distance between Vilnius and Krakow. Just the name "Warsaw" evoked images of ghettos, wartime desolation, and the worst of Soviet Empire's concrete jungles (the communists' didn't exactly beautify many of the cities they rebuilt).

But Warsaw really surprised me. If you didn't know the Old Town was completely rebuilt, you would think it was all original. Although there is plenty of modern architecture, somehow it doesn't feel cold and oppressive -like some of the cities in Russia- but alive and vibrant. I really wish I had taken more time to explore this fascinating city.

I am going to be bold and go with a whole country - Italy. Only been there once for 5 days and I would like to do a lot more exploring there. Those days I was not interested in Italy. I love Paris and I have spent a total about a year there but I wish I would have seen more of Italy.

gosh, almost everywhere! I spent a good 4-5 days in each city I went to but I still feel like I missed so much!

Lisbon, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Venice, Florence, Brugge (only spent a day there), Siena (only spent a day there)....as for the why... I like to savor places, not rush too much, try to wander a lot, etc. I just feel like these places all had so much to offer and it was my first time in each, so with the hindsight now, I feel like there's a lot more to see and experience in all of them.

I have to agree with Frank and ClaudiaLONDONI love the all the history, the people, the atmosphere, the cafes, and can't go there with out going to the theatre.

I'm with Cate on this one. BERLIN! I was there for a full week, and couldn't get enough. I would like to make Berlin my home away from home!

Paris.
Over 250 museums.
The food. ( Sub category,, AMAZING CHEESES and BREAD)
The wine.
The many daytrips withing a one hour train ride or less.
The cafe culture.
The Seine, the bridges and barges.

My shortest visit to Paris was 9 days, and I was very unhappy it was so short.. I do not know how someone can schedule a 2 week trip and give Paris "2 or 3 days" ugh.. LOL

I would like to return to London for a few more days, and of course I could see and do more in Rome, but, Paris is my number one.

Now, if the question did not specify "city" I would certainly LOVE to spend more time in Austria, Switerzland, and Greece.

I have to agree with Frank, Claudia and Robin - LONDON - I never tire of this city and the more I visit the more I need to go back. Seriously, I'm a London junkie. I need help.

London is my choice as well. It's like NY, LA, DC, and Boston rolled in to one, but with better architecture:)

Cary... I loved your post on: Don't spend too long in:
I learned a lot from reading it. That is the great thing about this web site.

Your post here makes me rethink our time in Gimmelwald. I'd love to go back there too!

It's not really a city, but I drove through the Cotswolds seven years ago and have been dying to go back ever since.

Salisbury!! It seems like I've just stopped there for the night and not ever really had a chance to stay and look around. I guess I'm always in too much of a hurry to get to Glastonbury, Bath, Devizes, etc.

Interlaken - we loved it. We went in the summer (neither of us are really skiers), but we loved all the hikes and day trips and the general climate. Definitely want to go back.

BTW - I like this thread. I thought my thread about where you spent too long was interesting, but I like that this one is looking for the positive side of life. Thanks!

I know it's an area, not a city, but Umbria, Italy captured my heart several years ago, and after several more visits it is still firmly entrenched as a little bit of heaven on earth.

I simply adore Paris. Last February I took the RS Paris city tour and then stayed for 3 nights on my own for a total of 10 nights. I plan on going again this October. THere are so many great sights; the Seine itself is so gorgeous. I love the Eiffel tower, I have a zillion pictures of it; the Champ du Mars parc right beside the Eiffel Tower is a fantastic place for picnicing, relaxing or people watching. There are so many different areas of the city that each have an individual flavour. The Metro is very convenient and I walked a lot just to look at the architecture and fantastic window displays in the shops. Happy Travels.

So far, my husband and I have definitely wanted to spend more time in each place we've visited. We feel fortunate to have had such enjoyable experiences where we have traveled that make us want to return.

I went to London 21 years ago and still want to go back. I also would like to go back to Rome to explore some more and to Normandy to do some more Battlebus tours.

VENICE, VENICE, VENICE !!! I've been to Europe seven times since 2000, and every time, but one, we've managed to get to Venice. I just like how it makes me feel.....and there's no where else like it. Italy, wins, hands down, for me, though Paris and Provence are a close second.

Brescia in Italy. There were many things there we didn't see in our half-day there on a day trip from Verona and we made some really good connections with locals (talk to people with dogs--they ALWAYS love to talk about their dogs and learn about yours). The old downtown area with the cathedral is pretty and not crowded with tourists. The castle on the hill has a great museum (and the curators love to share their knowledge of the area and have great pride in their home) and then there is the monastery museum. Brescia is not on the tourist map to speak of so since were there in March last year, there were NO other tourists at all. Loved it!

I will be a little different and say that I could easily spend more time in any city or locale that I have visited, but after a few days, any city has been comfortable to leave for the next destination. Now yes, I have spent 10 days in Rome, and loved it; but it was for a meeting, and I would have rather visited many other places in that time. I just find hitting a place and moving on is more enjoyable than an extended stay in one place. Now, I will, on subsequent trips hit the same place again, (hey, Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, Athens, wow!) enjoying the familiarity, but exploring new things is great.

I've been to London many times and on one occasion for 10 days. I still love it and would stay longer if I could. I miss it when I've been away too long. Where else? Paris and Edinburgh. Also, while not exactly a city, Whitby in Yorkshire. James, James, James, we couldn't possibly thinking of the same London. I'm sorry if you judge a city by the buildings alone.

Rome and London are probably the top of my list. I don't think I would ever run out of things to see in either of those cities.

Istanbul-three days was not enough, with so much to see. Kabul (pre-Soviet invasion)-could have spent a second week or more.

SEVILLE, SPAIN!!!!
Charming, friendly, suprisingly affordable, clean, interesting mix of new and old, easily walkable to all points, & cool stuff on both sides of the river!

James, are you sure you went to London, UK and not CT? Ugly buildings??? Did you happen to see Parliment, and a little building behind it called Westminster Abby? My first glance at Parliment occurred at night, unexpectedly...just rounded the corner and THERE IT WAS. I know its oft photographed, but its the most amazing structure I've ever seen.
We are returning to London in '09 for all the reasons listed in previous posts.
Also 7 days in Paris was not enough. Both places have such great public transportation. No need for
a car. You can get to Windsor from London, and Giverney (you know, Monet's home) and (I'm really gonna butcher this spelling) Versailles on public transit from Paris.
Bottom line it really is a matter of personal preference. Enjoy!!!!!

Not a city but the Dolomites would be an area where I would have liked to have spent more time. I prefer small towns and rural areas to the bigger cities but I would like to go back to Paris and Rome for another 3-4 days. Never get enough of the small towns and alpine villages in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Northern Italy too. The problem is deciding whether to go back to places we love or to try something new. Norway is on the short list for a new place to try. Looks like a beautiful country. One more thing. Not a place but to go back for some Italian gelato...the little gelato store in Cortona is calling me back.

Vienna. I had nearly three days there but could easily have spent much more. I was surprised at how much I liked the city.

'Seriously, I'm a London junkie. I need help.'
Lol Karen, me too!! ;-) I am obsessed with it, and I would go back there in a second! I also would've liked to spend more time in Paris and Vienna. Vienna especially - we were only there one full day, and a huge thunderstorm kept us taking refuge inside for a lot of the time.
