Driving from Paris to Milan

We are trying to avoid the Bernard Pass. Does anyone know a fast route without that pass? Thank you

You don't need to drive through the pass itself, since there is a long base road tunnel that takes out the pass from your route. If you want to avoid the route via Switzerland, you can easily travel via Annecy and Chamonix, using the Mont Blanc, on a full-highway route. There is also the Frejus route, but that is longer. Any of the three tunnels has a hefty toll above € 30.

Andre, is that toll new? I have never been under Mt Blanc but knew that they have a toll. I have several times been through the Gotthard tunnel and San Bernardino tunnels and have never had to pay. When did the toll come in?

Nigel, the internal Swiss roads and tunnels are not tolled (hence no tolls on the San Bernardino and San Gottardo tunnels). The other 3 major alpine tunnels (Frejus, Mont Blanc and Grand San Bernardo) all have had tolls for decades - if not since they were opened. I'm actually wrong about the prices though. These are the single fares for the tunnels at the moment, for a normal passenger car, one-way (there are discounts for return trips): Mont Blanc - € 41,40 (http://www.atmb.com/IMG/pdf_2013-01-01_Tariffe_ITA-3.pdf) Frejus - € 41,40 (http://www.sitaf.it/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&layout=item&id=172&Itemid=151) Grand San Bernardo - € 25,00 (http://www.letunnel.com/tariffe.asp?id=37&l=1)
Munt la Schera - € 30,00 (http://www.scipas.com/pdf/tunnel/2.pdf)
