high season without car you may need to reserve. with a car you can be very flexible. i think your flight price is most influenced by your flight price to the first major city in europ, i.e. paris or amsterdam. these cities have flights to LJU (tiny airplane), or you could use boad from italy, or train in from another country.

Outside of July August you can usually drive up without a reservation.
