Will be in London only overnight (October 24), but between planes would like suggestions for a good hotel with good food in hotel or nearby.
Nearby - that's pretty much every area of London then. Have you checked guidebooks for recommendations? Rick Steves has a good one on London.
Which airport(s) are you flying into/out of? Do you want to go into London or stay nearer the airport. Would you consider staying in Windsor (if Heathrow for one or both flights)? What time do you arrive and what is time for out bound flight? All these make a difference in recommendations. More details, better suggesstions.
Thanks for the responses. We will be flying in and out of Heathrow; arriving about 7PM and leaving the next day about 3PM. Logic tells me that near the airport would make sense, but how are accommodations and food?
Kevin - Rather than going into London you could stay in Windsor for the night. It is a short distance from Heathrow.
We had a similar schedule of flights and chose to stay in Windsor, based on recommendations here. It was an excellent choice. We stayed at Frances Lodge, a B&B that has lovely, modern rooms (and large upscale bathrooms, at leaset in our room). 90 pounds for a nice room and gourmet breakfast. Check out the revfiews on Tripadvisor. You can stroll the path along the Thames, and walk into Eton if you like, to get the kinks out of your legs. We did this both in the evening and in the morning. Also watched part of the guard change in th emorning before heading to the airport. There are lots of good choices for dinner, from riverside pubs to Indian curry houses to very good Italian (La Taverna). The only downside to Windsor that I can see is that although it is very close, getting there is not all that easy. Taxi would be easy, but we were advised they charge a lot. I did not verify that; we just took the local bus, which takes 45 minutes because it winds all around the local villages. Next time, given that the lodging is so inexpensive, we'll opt for the taxi, at least for getting there.
