Spatenhaus an der oper reataurant in Munich. Someone told us it served the best sauerbraten in Munich. Does anyone know if its true? And if not can anyone recomment a restaurant that has good sauerbraten in Munich. Will only be in Munich one night when we arrive and then on to Austria. Returning to Munich ten days later, so have at least another day there. Plan to do Marienplatz on first day and looking for good german meal that night. Thanks to all.
Hi Ed. I don't know, but I see that it's very highly rated on Tripadvisor: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g187309-d896760-Reviews-Spatenhaus-Munich_Bavaria.html
I know that every time we go to Munich, we go to the Augustiner Brauhaus. It's the oldest brewery in Munich with great food. It was recommended to us by the front desk at our hotel and it's our favorite place in Munich now!
Ah, sauerbraten...I'll be anxiously awaiting any and all responses. Most seem to forget the 'sauer' part...
I can second the Augustiner, I love the place - and I checked their website, clicked on the menus and yes, they have Sauerbraten - calling it Muenchner Sauerbraten, it's served with Semmelknoedel (bread dumplings) and red cabbage. They also publish a menu of the daily specials in addition to their standard menus. It is a short walk from Marienplatz. These are the directions/nap from their website:

Thanks to all. Waiting and researching. Will get back to all.
Sauerbrauten is not high on my list of German foods, however I enjoy the Ratskeller in most German towns for local dishes. The one in Munich is huge with a great variety. It is very convenient to Marienplatz for lunch
We'll be in Munich tomorrow for 4 days. If I notice any particularly enticing sauerbraten, I'll report back in a few days. We plan to hit some of our favorite Munich hangouts after 3 weeks in Italy. Yum, can hardly wait.
I don't care much for sauerbraten either, but after reading Anna's post about all the foods at Augustiner, my mouth is watering!!! At least I'll be able to get food similar to German food when we're in eastern Europe next month! :)
I have to vote for the Augustiner Bierhalle also. We loved it. Awesome beer, and I know this sounds bad, but the rumpsteak was good. And they have all types of breaded pig and suasages too. How can anyone go wrong with breaded pig meat? If you want a splurge, go to the Restaurant Zum Alten Markt on Dreifaltigkeitsplatze. Kinda pricey. (About a 100 euro for two with a couple bottles of wine in 2008) They had a small, cheesy, sucky, English menu, and then a german menu with just 3 or 4 food groupings of local dishes. The menu changes all the time, depending on what is fresh or in season. I just remember the white wines were incredible.
Sauerbraten is delicious, but it isn't a traditional Bavarian dish. So, that might be the problem why you aren't enjoying it in Bavarian restaurants. You need to move over a state or two. The Rheinland or Swabia for example. As with any food, it can be made poorly and if you have never had the good stuff, you will then think that all sauerbraten tastes bad. It is even made differently depending on where you are eating it. The Rhein area may put raisins in it, to balance out the sourness. It is easy to make though, if anyone wants to make it at home when you return. You don't need gingersnaps either, as is called for in some recipes, unless you like that flavor a lot.
I lived in Munich for almost 7 years - always went to the Augustiner Restaurant for authentic bavarian food. Their menu includes a wide variety of traditional foods including sauerbraten. I was never much of a sauerbraten fan but those who were fans, loved it here. The chicken, schnitzels, cordon bleu, wurst are out of this world and their bier is wonderful! It is closer to Karlsplatz, a quick stroll from Marienplatz. If it is sunny out, see if you can get seated in the biergarten out in back.
I also highly recommend the Augustiner. When my husband and I dined there I ordered the meatloaf - what Midwestern girl doesn't like meatloaf? The waiter looked at my husband, then at me, then back to him and asked quietly, "does she know what that is?" my husband said, "no." the waiter suggested a sausage dish that was excellent! Always listen to your waiter!
If you are in Bavaria you need to try Schweinehaxe. A nuckle of pork slow roasted with a crisy crackling - the meat just falls of the bone. Usually served with a dumpling, called a knoedel, which tastes and has the consistency of wall paper paste. Just ask for Bratkartoffeln instead of Knoedel if you dont fancy eating glue. As others have mentioned, try the Augustiner in Kaufingerstrasse near Marienplatz. Great atmosphere. As Jo says, Sauerbraten is more Rheinland Pfalz and if you get a bad one you'll wonder what all the fuss is about.
Shoni is right! Munich is not the place to look for great authentic Sauerbraten. That's like tring to find great gumbo in, say, Chicago. Try Schweinebraten with Knoedel and Sauerkraut or, as Shoni suggests, Schweinshaxe.
I recommend the Haxnbauer Restaurant (on the expensive side, but goooooood). Or go to the Spatenhaus (nice loction!) but eat something Bavarian! Oh, and whatever you do, don't go to the Ratskeller - it's a Touristtrap.
